Sure. That's why I prefer Slackware Linux for my personal use...

Linux is still far from perfect; its IO performance and especially FS
performance is very poor, and to get proper numbers from a FC array needs
to tweak heavily the kernel. However, you've really got bang for your
bucks.

Yes, but they are made for different people, all commercial unixes are
made with the professional user in mind, and a normalskilled unixuser have
NO problems installing a Sun or SGI machine.

Windows is made for idiots, so even a idiot can install it.. linux
tries to copy windows in "easy to install" aspect..
(And is very good at it, I would say that except for partitioning
its easier to install redhat9 than win2000)

However, the installation is a very small part of the total system
administration, the reason that I "always" choose sun hardware for
servers are that it never get any compatiblity problems.. Also I
think that Solaris is better built than linux, even if linux also
works fine as a server.. it just takes more administration.

The big problem with RPM's are dependencies.

It's pretty easy on both Solaris and IRIX too you know.. since they
both have their own packageformats. SGI even have a fluffy webinterface
to install software over the net with.

Unless you have to install on bare metal, in which case it can be
simple, or it can cause you to gnash your teeth...
