| I'm trying to add an old SSA to out E3000 which is currently running Solaris 9. At the moment I'm gettin ONLINE/OFFLINE messages from the system: Nov 3 16:01:29 galaxy soc: [ID 854183 kern.info] ID[SUNWssa.soc.login.6010] soc0: port 0 WWN 8af11e: Fibre Channel login succeeded Nov 3 16:01:29 galaxy soc: [ID 854183 kern.info] ID[SUNWssa.soc.link.1010] soc0: port 0 WWN 8af11e: message: SSA110 V3.12 (092297) Mon Sep 22 17:27:15 1997 Nov 3 16:01:35 galaxy soc: [ID 854183 kern.info] ID[SUNWssa.soc.link.5010] soc0: port 0 WWN 8af11e: Fibre Channel is OFFLINE Nov 3 16:01:49 galaxy soc: [ID 854183 kern.info] ID[SUNWssa.soc.link.6010] soc0: port 0 WWN 8af11e: Fibre Channel is ONLINE I'm trying to upgrade the firmwear on the device since it also complained about that on boot up. The patch I'm using to get the needed firmware is 103351-02, the only one I could find. I run pgkadd to add the patch .... root@galaxy root # pkgadd -d 103351-02 The following packages are available: 1 SUNWssadv.1 SPARCstorage Array Solaris 5.3 Drivers (sparc) 1.0 2 SUNWssadv.2 SPARCstorage Array Solaris 5.3 Drivers (sparc) 2.1,REV=1.0 3 SUNWssadv.20 SPARCstorage Array Solaris 5.3 Drivers (sparc) 2.0 4 SUNWssaop.1 SPARCstorage Array Utility (sparc) 1.0 5 SUNWssaop.2 SPARCstorage Array Utility (sparc) 2.1,REV=1.0 6 SUNWssaop.20 SPARCstorage Array Utility (sparc) 2.0,REV=1.0 Select package(s) you wish to process (or 'all' to process all packages). (default: all) [?,??,q]: and I get this: Installation of <SUNWssadv> was suspended (administration). No changes were made to the system. I haven't had any success installing any of them. So I decided to force it in by using ssaadm which is already on the system. The firmware update is in the SUNWssaop.20 package, so with that in mind I tried running the following command: root@galaxy root # /usr/sbin/ssaadm -v download -f /root/103351-02/SUNWssaop.20/reloc/SUNWssa/lib/3.6/ssafirmware /devices/sbus\@2,0/SUNW,soc\@d,10000/SUNW,pln\@a0000000,8af11e:ctlr and end up with this: Opening the SPARCstorage Array for I/O /usr/sbin/ssaadm: Download Failed I ran /usr/sbin/ssaadm -v -p /devices/sbus\@2,0/SUNW,soc\@d,10000/SUNW,pln\@a0000000,8af11e:ctlr and it seemed to detect the array and type just fine, but when it tried to get details on the drives it hung. Is there a step I'm missing to upgrade the firmware? Shouldn't Sol. 9 play nice with an array? ---Christopher |

| My mistake using pkgadd instead of patchadd ... but a new challenge awaits you! I used patchadd as you suggested and received this output: root@galaxy root # l total 32856 drwxr-xr-x 4 root other 512 Oct 28 15:46 ./ drwxr-xr-x 25 root root 1.0K Oct 28 19:19 ../ drwxr-xr-x 9 root root 512 May 15 1996 103351-02/ -rw-r--r-- 1 root other 6.7M Oct 28 14:31 103351-02.tar -rw-r--r-- 1 endsley staff 9.3M Oct 28 14:21 SDS-4_2_1_108693_06-solsparc-03-aug-2001.zip drwxr-xr-x 3 root other 512 Oct 28 16:04 packages/ root@galaxy root # patchadd 103351-02 Checking installed patches... One or more patch packages included in 103351-02 are not installed on this system. Patchadd is terminating. What other software needs to be installed? ssaadm is already installed in /usr/sbin. When I installed Solaris 9 on this machine I made sure I installed the whole end-user and OEM packages trying to make the array happy. I don't have access to the original software that came with the array, on I'm only finding sparse help at sun.com ---Christopher |

I noticed from your original post the following: The following packages are available: 1 SUNWssadv.1 SPARCstorage Array Solaris 5.3 Drivers (sparc) 1.0 2 SUNWssadv.2 SPARCstorage Array Solaris 5.3 Drivers (sparc) 2.1,REV=1.0 3 SUNWssadv.20 SPARCstorage Array Solaris 5.3 Drivers (sparc) 2.0 Are you attempting to install Solaris 2.3 (i.e. the Solaris 5.3 component) patches on a Solaris 9 system? As to the software you can use Veritas Volume Manager with a SparcStorage Array. The SSA is licensed to use Veritas...at least it was with older versions. Josh |
