A coworker told me, for instance, if prtdiag says this is a V1280
model, it could still be an E2900, because it just uses a different
chassis. If so, there's no reliable way to tell what the hardware
model is other than manually recording the information somewhere?

Use the #. (pound-period) Command to access the "lom>" prompt. Afterward, use the showmodel Command to display the model name. (This may not be available, depending on the firmware that the system is running.

1. At the "lom>" prompt, type the following:

lom> showmodel

2. The model name of the system is displayed.

model: Sun Fire V1280
