| Any Sun users interested in Sun's pending Opteron offerings? Any interest or concerns? Worried about impact on Sparc? Or think it's a great move? And what will be the likely OS choice: Linux or Solaris? Cheers, Patrick Thibodeau Senior Editor Computerworld 202 333 2448 |

Want to see where it goes before I make any decisions. I'm not particularly worried about Sparc as I was at a roadmap briefing around 6 months ago and they had this one quite well thought out at that point. As for OS choice - this is Sun we're talking about. It'll be Solaris. No - Linux. Umm - definitely solaris/linux. Probably one or the other. Realistically I'd hope that Sun would ship what the customers ask for rather than trying to force them into a single path, especially on hardware which can run either, however Sun have a *very* confused OS strategy which varies depending on who is speaking and what project it's in relation to. Or think it's a great move? It's a good move, from the point of view that there's obviously a market for low end x86 boxes. Sun might as well be in that market, provided they can do it and avoid the razor thin margins of the other players. > And what will be the likely OS choice: Linux or Solaris? That one's a no-brainer: Solaris. -- Rich Teer, SCNA, SCSA President, Rite Online Inc. Voice: +1 (250) 979-1638 URL: http://www.rite-online.net |

May increase the number of large memory, 64-bit applications. Meets the needs of customers who demand x86 price/performance and would shop elsewhere if Sun didn't offer it. John groenveld@acm.org |
