One of the features announced with the Ultra 40 and Ultra 45 (at least
if I'm reading it right) us a a dual layer DVD-RW/CD-RW drive. If this
indeed the case, will Solaris support writing to dual layer disks and if
so, is there any chance that will be backported to support such beasts
as dual layer DVD drives on USB?

Its not really a case of does Solaris support dual layer, it more is
there an app which does so.

So the other question is that does this app also work on usb burners.

You can use the same burning apps as linux so I think you will be able
to use dual layer burner, just not out of the box till the one that
comes with solaris is updated

using an usb dvd/cd burner (LG external). It works nicely with cdrw, no
particular problem

Never tested on dual layer (YET), cause I don't have dual layer dvds.

I have a Sony Dual layer DVD burner (USB/Firewire) and it worked right
from the first time using cdrw for single layer DVD's - almost too easy.
I'm happy. One advantage of the external drive is that my wife can
borrow it for backing up her computer.

A better way of stating my original question would be: Since the Ultra
40 and 45 will have dual layer DVD burners (providing I'm reading the
spec sheets right), will Sun be shipping a version of cdrw or cdrecord
that handles dual layer DVD's?
