Default DVD boot problem on Sun Blade 1000

I have a Sun Blade 1000 that has an internal DVD drive that will boot
off a Solaris 8 (2/02) CD-ROM but will not boot off a Solaris 10 DVD.
(Both 11/06 and 3/05.) Any ideas, other then a bad DVD drive?

Thanks

With an old DVD drive it might be an issue of +R or -R, where -R is more
compatable.

It's original CDs and DVDs from Sun, not copies. I can read the DVDs
on my Ultra60.

I Have a SunBlade 2000 with similar problem . I cant boot form a
DVD produced
in a DVD burner. And I use only -R media.

I have Installed a Plextor 760 DVD RW drive in a SunBlade 1500
and
this drive performs well.

If you have a Toshiba DVD-ROM drive that is standard with a Sun Blade 1000,
then check if the drive has the latest firmware.
This can be done via:

% iostat -E | grep DVD

if you get output like:

Vendor: TOSHIBA Product: DVD-ROM SD-M1401 Revision: 1009 Serial No:

you're already up to date.
If the revision is 1007 or something else you may need the patch.

The latest patch is 111649-04.

I just checked my system and it seems to have a TOSHIBA with a SD-M1711
drive so the patch doesn't even apply.

I went through the same problem. There is a sun bug ticket open for
this.

This is a known problem as the sd-m1401 firmware 1009 cannot boot an
image larger than 3GB. Sun recommends to use the Toshiba SD-M1711.
Other disks are sure to work but I am not sure which ones.

The sd-m1711 is expensive. I am being forced to buy it as I do not
have any other means to boot solaris 10.

Actually my drive will boot small images with no problems. its when
you get to to the 4.x GB image of solaris 10 that is the problem.

Thanks
