I'd like to replace the original CD-ROM drive with something that can
read DVDs and record CDs. I'd appreciate any tips on manufacturers,
models, and things to look out for during installation.

Just about any "IDE" based CD-Rom drive. I've used Sony without any
problems in my Blade 100. I've just purchased a new Sony, with Dual
Layer capability. I have not installed it yet, it's slated to go in my
new Blade 2500. I don't expect the Dual Layer part to work just yet,
but all other features.

Maybe someone can reply on the state of Dual Layer recording in Solaris,
is it possible yet?
