| Is it possible to use an LCD flat panel display on my Ultra 60? Running David Tong's excellent "fbinfo" script yields; huge{~}: fbinfo ffb@1e is FFB2+ Vertical Creator 3D 1280x1024x67 Monitor type 4 (Sun 19" monitor) The monitor is huge, heavy, old and uses loads of power, so I'd like to replace it with a flat panel, if possible. You will need to get an adapter to VGA of course. Make sure whatever frame buffer (aka graphics card) you have in your U60 will generate the resolution of the display. Otherwise interpolation is used, which does not work too well. I'm using a Creator 3D in a U80 at 1600x1200. The Elite3D, which is found in some U60s will not work at 1600x1200. -- Dave (from the UK) Please note my email address changes periodically to avoid spam. OK, that's the kind of stuff I need to know, I think. -- Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge: it is those who know little, not those who know much, who so positively assert that this or that problem will never be solved by science. I drive two Dell 2001FP's off two Creator 3D's here. Works great. I previously had them in my U60, now they're running in a Blade 2000. The C3D was a very nice card for its time, and is one of the better options for the U60 without spending huge $$$. You'll want to get the 13W3-to-VGA adapter(s) if you don't already have them. Get only the genuine Sun PN 130-3034 adapters - be careful of knockoff adapters, they frequently don't handle the sync conversion correctly and leave you with an unusable signal. You may also find that you can only run the flat panels at a 60Hz refresh rate (not really a problem since you don't have the actual scan refreshes to deal with, but some software configuration may be required). "man fbconfig". |

Well ... ffbconfig -prconf shows: ================================================== ==================== --- Hardware Configuration for /dev/fbs/ffb0 --- Type: double-buffered FFB2+ with Z-buffer Board: rev 2 (Vertical) PROM Information: @(#)ffb2p.fth 2.9 98/07/14 FBC: version 0x3241906d DAC: Brooktree 9070, version 1 (Pac2) 3DRAM: Mitsubishi 130b, version 2 EDID Data: Available - EDID version 1 revision 3 Monitor Sense ID: 7 (Unknown 38x30cm RGB color monitor) Monitor possible resolutions: 1024x768x60, 1024x768x70, 1024x768x75, 1280x1024x60, 640x480x60, 640x480x60i, 1280x1024x60c Current resolution setting: 1280x1024x60 ================================================== ==================== And I am using a KDS 19" LCD monitor which I have had for perhaps three years or so. I used it on my Ultra-2 for a while prior to the Ultra-60 -- again with a FFB2+ framebuffer. Note that the system does not recognize the monitor, because of the signals lost in the 13W3 to HD-15 adaptor, so it was necessary to manually configure the resolution. (This particular monitor doesn't do 1152x900 -- it selects 1152x850 instead, so the standard default resolution does not work -- but more recent ones seem to be quite happy with 1152x900. One reason for the change to LCD (other than power conservation) was the sheer weight of it when it sat on top of the Ultra-2 -- making changes in hardware rather difficult. :-) Good Luck, DoN. -- Email: <dnichols@d-and-d.com> | Voice (all times): (703) 938-4564 (too) near Washington D.C. | http://www.d-and-d.com/dnichols/DoN.html --- Black Holes are where God is dividing by zero --- |

Since a Sun LCD works on both an Ultra 10 and a Sun Blade 1000 using a Creator 3D card I can't see why it wouldn't work on an Ultra 60. Trinean |
