I saw in the Sun docs where a maximum of 2 9.1GB scsi HD's would work. But theoretically, any size should work, right, since scsi has no size limitation. I just discovered that a 1.6" Seagate drive will not fit in an Ultra-2. |

Hmmm. I suppose some metal retainers could be removed in the Ultra-2, allowing the drive to fit. I might have to use a bandsaw, however. Well, it looks like some of the metal retainers are rivoted to the bottom of the case. I really would like to get this thing to fit. |

Looks that way. The U2 has two side-by-side 1/2-height slots. Too bad the U2 doesn't have a full-height slot. I do have a 9.1GB Seagate as well, so maybe I can use the 9.1GB and the 18.2 in some sort of external RAID enclosure. The 9.1GB fits, but isn't recognized by the U2, partly because it lacks a force single-ended jumper. So maybe I can use both of them after all. |

I think there were also some 4" (same form factor as 3.5" floppy) SCSI disks that were full height of 3.5" (monsters!). I'm not sure what they call the 1" high SCSI disks that are used in Ultra2s. Are they 1/3 height? I usually duck that question by referring to them as 1" high. </pedant> Yes you could find some 611 unipack or 711 multipack (6-drive or 12-drive) on eBay. They are really quite cheap these days. I think I've seen 711s go for something as low as US$30 + shipping? I like the 711s myself. -- Juhan Leemet Logicognosis, Inc. |
