Hello,

I have used a cheap LITEON DVD-RW on a SPARC SB1500
( $79 )

It has one major fault, it cant read the DVD's it has written.
It gets repeated read errors when trying to boot solaris 10 U2 DVD.
I can read the DVD-R on other DVD/CD-RW combo drives,
but not on the unit which produced them - which is hillarious........

I need some advice on which DVD-RW/DVD-RAM DVD-DL-RW
to buy.

I dont care if its 5 times the price of the cheap junk the PC stores
sell to day . I want it to work !

Please advise which model to buy.

//Lars

I have used a number of LG super-multi drives (they write and read
(almost) all formats in existence) with great success (both the USB and
ATAPI versions). I paid only 37.50 Euro for the last batch.

that's odd. i have a Lite-On that works quite well. it even reads dual
layer discs that my other readers don't.

that's kinda the problem. most of the expensive ones i've seen
(Panasonic and Sony) fail as often as the cheap ones.
more often than not the no-name drives in discount outlets are actually
Phillips, Sony, Pioneer, Panasonic, or Richo with a different "branded"
firmware. same goes for NICs as seen with Linksys, D-Link, Hawking, etc
all using the exact same chip. some suck worse than others in the
Windows world because you're relying on that company's developers to
produce a driver rather than 1 driver that works for all.

*Avoid* the HP dvd840. Jorg has looked at my OpenSolaris system and
determined there is a bug in the firmware of the recorder. He did update
cdrecord in an attempt to sort it out but to date I am unable to use it
on Solaris to write CDs or DVD's.

It works fine on Windows of course but it is useless for Solaris at the
minute.

I've been happy with Plextor drives. Plextor distributes their firmware
updates w/o requiring a Windows installation and the drives can be flashed
with Joerg Schilling's pxupdate program

I have a Plextor USB drive, works perfectly.

Since I have never read anything bad about Plextor, and having replaced
alot of Liteons I found a $30-50 extra for a Plextor be nothing to worry
about.

Yes I can order Plextor PX-760A for $100 locally.
They say on their web that it has a "premium positioning drive"

Anyone know what or why this is better than others ?

Hi,

I now got the Plextor 760A drive installed in the SB1500
and it does boot from the DVD-R Solaris10u2 media.

Thanks
