| I have a number of Ultra 10s with the Creator/3D graphics card (with the 13W3 connector) which are currently using old Sun CRT monitors. The computers also have the 15-pin VGA connector (m64?). I am looking for recommendations for 19 inch LCD monitors which are compatible with these systems and cabable of at least 24-bit color and resonable resolution. Thanks, -- Steve |

For the ATI (VGA) connector you can just take any monitor you find in a computer store as long as it does support VGA in or you have a VGA to DVI converter. For the creator3d you will need a 13W3->VGA converter, there are quite many for sale at ebay, but not all of them work well. If you don't have one with VGA in you would need to hook a VGA->DVI on top of the first converter/adapter and I think you would have a crappy image quality with double adapters. //Aho |

I think it'd be well worth the effort of trying to use the Creator3D if you can if you plan to spend lots of time in front of it! Here's a list of monitors that have been tested etc. and the results: http://playstation2-linux.com/sog.php (The playstation2 has the same sync issues as these Sun framebuffers). I can recommend a UK supplier for the 13w3 <> VGA converters whose products actually work (don't laugh - there are some that don't) but I hope others here will know USA etc. sources. Good luck! Yes, someone will be spending many hours per day in front of it so picture quality needs to be good. The graphics are not detailed or fast moving, but we need at least 24-bits of color and at least 1280x1024 to display enough information, with a low flicker and a stable image. The sync issue is the concern so the playstation2 list looks useful. But I am confused by several Sun monitors showing up as not working? I will look into the 13w3 to VGA convertors. Recommendations for a US source? Thanks, -- Steve |

( Ultra60 with 2 slots and Xinerama. Nice They are very crisp and clear and of course running 24bit. There will be lots of other flat panels that do the same I'm sure, just make sure that their native resolution is the same as the resolution you want to run at (ie 1280x1024 in this case) and I believe the Creator3D will give superb results for the sort of use you describe. Don't the 13W3->VGA adapter fix this? //Aho |

I believe that some adaptors have electronics in them that purports to extract the sync signal but my set up uses "passive" types (just pin to pin as required) and monitors that handle sync on green. After a lot of tests trying other options, that's the one that worked for me. John |

I'm thinking a bit of getting one, even if I do have a Sun monitor with 13W3. //Aho |

The Sun Framebuffer FAQ (http://www.sunhelp.org/faq/FrameBuffer.html) says different: --------------------------------------------------------------------------- What are the pinouts for the 13W3 connectors? NB: This interface is NOT formally documented or committed to. It is subject to change without notice. 1 2 3 4 5 o o o o o (o) (o) (o) A1 o o o o o A2 A3 6 7 8 9 10 Pins A1, A2 and A3 carry the Red, Green and Blue signals respectively. On a monochrome frame buffer the signal is carried on Pin A2 (Green). The following is the configuration for the Creator and Creator 3D and all future Frame Buffers. 1 SCL 6 SDA 2 +5V 7 Reserved [VSYNCH] 3 SENSE2 8 SENSE1 4 Ground 9 SENSE0 5 CSYNCH 10 Ground Analog RGB is 0V (black) to 0.7V (full intensity) into a 75ohm load. CSYNC is a TTL signal into a 75ohm min, 1K typ load. CSYNC is a negative composite sync. Sync on green is not supported. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- So you need a display with Composite Sync capability.
