Hi It's like compairing apples to peas (If You kno what I mean. :-) ) A Sun Ultra 5 has a 64 bit UltraSPARC IIi CPU, and the Intel PC's only have a 32 bit CPU, but it dosn't mean that You will notice the difference. I don't think You should buy the 360 MHz Ultra 5, because it only have 256 KB L2 cache. I think You should look at a 333 MHz or a 400 MHz Ultra 5 because they have 2 MB L2 cache. I have a Sun Blade 100 with a 500 MHz UltraSPARC IIe with 256 KB L2 cache, and I think it's even a little slower than a Ultra 5 with the 400 MHz CPU. The disk in a Ultra 5 is standard IDE, but I think You should buy a new disk because the original disk is to slow. (The first ones were only 5400 RPM.) The disk controller can only use up to a 128 GB disk, so it's no use to buy a 160 GB. The Keyboard and mouse use a "special" Sun connector, so get them at once, but You can use a normal VGA display (minimum 1152x900) I use a 18.1" TFT on my Blade 100. :-) Greetings from a former Technical presale from Denmark. Kent Wormsdorf -- PS. (Sorry, only in danish.) Er der nogen der mangler en mand med lidt viden om Sun HW og SW, så må I gerne sende mig en E-mail. Jeg er uddannet datamatiker og har senest arbejdet som teknisk presale konsulent. |

I will take all that into consideration. |

As others have pointed out, those are not current production. You might see performance similar to an X86 of about twice that clock speed -- but of course it depends very much on what you are doing. How much X86 can you buy for a hundred bucks (which is about what I assume you're looking at spending)? I use an Ultra 5 as a file server, and I find myself rebooting it every couple of months to apply security patches. Otherwise it just sits there doing its job. -- The e-mail address in our reply-to line is reversed in an attempt to minimize spam. Our true address is of the form che...@prodigy.net. |
