| Hi all, Have just replaced the original hard disk with a Seagate ST373207FC hard disk. When I boot from CD to install Solaris 9, eventualy the install fails as it cannot find any hard disks. Do I have to use an authentic Sun disk, or can I somehow get it to be recognised? Many thanks, Graham |

So basically you need to at the first chance to exit the Solaris install to get to the prompt and type "format". Paul |

| Hi Paul, When I type "format" I get the message "No disks found". Basically I never used them. Only SCSI. My questions would be then, is the controller supported, is the disk setup correctly for the controller. I have never had a problem with Seagate Barracuda and Cheetah drives in all my Workstations using SCSI. The way I see it is the disk is not being recognized by the controller, or the controller is not being recognized by the format command or Solaris. Paul |

Since the Blade 1000 has a build in Fc controler for the internal disk, yes it is supported. However the seagate should work just fine in that system. MAYBE there are some jumper settings on the drive that prevent it from working, might want to check the "manual" for the drive. IF other drives work in that slot and this one will definetly not, i suspect the drive is faulty. Does the drive gets shown from the OBP by probe-fcal ? -- Barbie - Prayers are like junkmail for Jesus I have seen things you lusers would not believe. I've seen Sun monitors on fire off the side of the multimedia lab. I've seen NTU lights glitter in the dark near the Mail Gate. All these things will be lost in time, like the root partition last week. Time to die. |

Yes, Seagate Cheetah series drives have to function in any case. > MAYBE there are some jumper settings on the drive that prevent it from > working, Unlikely here. > Does the drive gets shown from the OBP by probe-fcal ? There is no such reality as "probe-fcal" or "probe-fcal-all", at least not on sb1k/2k. BUT you have to use "probe-scsi" instead (while "probe-scsi-all" is not required, as you don't want to probe for additionally installed controllers installed through PCI). You may ask, what, SCSI?? --->> Yes, FC-AL uses the scsi protocol definitions (maybe enhanced), just through a different cable medium. Inside SUNW it was a design decision back in the late 90's to treat FC-AL drives absolutely equal to SCSI drives, if you heard that correctly. So please give us the "probe-scsi" output. I expect it to be missing the hdd you are trying to set up. I had exactly the same situation on sb2k (and therefore sb1k) twice: Well, even HotSwap drives may lose electrical/physical CONTACT sometimes, especially when you don't press just hard enough when installing them into their bays(!). Please reinstall the drive and try again. |
