I saw a crossover wiring : diagram for DB9 to RJ-45 in a document so I guess it would be easy to : wire up one. In older Sun servers, wasn't it enough to just use a : DB9-to-DB9 or DB25 serial terminal cable to connect? We use the console cables that come with cisco routers on the newer sun hardware. Using the wrong serial cable is going to break anything and if it appears to work, the worst thing that could happen is the flow control is messed up but a fast PC as a termainl running at 9600 baud shouldn't need any flow control. -tim http://web.abnormal.com |

You can use the same cables and the same serial console switch. (Or the Cisco cable you use to connect the Router/Switch to your Laptop.) > On the other hand I think even a server could have a simple text-only > video interface and a keyboard port to make it easier to hook it up and > configure. Don't think that would add too much in price and power. Please No! A server belongs in the server room with a serial consoleswitch. A KVM Switch is far more expensive and far less helpfull. You even can't log the session to a file. I would rather have Sun or any other manufacturer get the extra money which would go into a video interface. A sun sparc is fully manageble through the serial interface. A sun amd64 is not.
