Default old PC hardware from Sun?

Hi,

What's this?

http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...tem=3442632124

For those of you who can't read German:
The seller says that it's a AT enclosure of a Sun Server.

IIRC Sun never sold a box looking like that, but
there really is a Sun logo on it.

Hard to tell from the angle, but it looks like an ftSPARC to me,
Sun's pre-Netra FT1800 fault tolerant server.

Not very likely. The closest Sun came to that was the 386i.

Except for the fact that he will only ship to Germany, it would almost
be interesting to bid on - just to see what it *really* is ;-)

I've never seen anything like it, but I note it's got the really old
Sun logo font on, with Sun in all-lowercase bold font, instead of the
current italic font with uppercase S. I think that switch was sometime
in the late sun3/early sun4 days, but I'm not sure. (It also doesn't
match the color scheme for the early sun4 server boxes I've seen, but
seems to match more the sun3 case colors I've seen.) Maybe one of the
old hardware pages linked to from http://www.sunhelp.org/ can be of
more help.

I think some of the SPARCengine motherboards could go into an AT
enclosure, but then the case wouldn't have a Sun logo on.

I've got a 386i. It's different.

I'm really tempted to buy it. 14 EURO might be worth the
fun to see what it is...
I asked the seller if there was any partnumber on it,
but she couldn't give more information.

Another thing about the logo: There's the "microsystems" below
"sun". From my experience (my memory may be wrong) I would
say that this was common with sun4c boxes. If I should
guess the age I would say it's early 90ies.

Looking at my old Sun hardware Sun3 are just as yellow as
my 386i and my 4/110. :-)
This box looks pretty white for me. Maybe it's a different
plastic than the other sun enclosures.

Too late. As far as I am concerned we will never know
what this really is.

It'll probably be back soon, or end up on a dumpsite ;-)
