Default PGX32 hates my monitor

I have an Ultra-80 with PGX32 graphics. It is able to sync my (Sun)
21-inch CRT, but 10 seconds after the OBP banner appears the monitor
goes into what looks like "power-saving mode" -- the screen blanks and
the LED on the front of the monitor blinks. I have to power-cycle the
monitor to get it to sync again, with the same result after another 10
seconds. It is able to use any smaller monitor just fine. I have
upgraded the OBP to 3.31 (latest available) and "set-defaults"'d, with
no changes.

Any ideas?

TIA,

Dan

try a different res at bootup:

setenv output-device screen:r1280x1024x60

for instance.
It may not like sep sync.

This may also be a sync drive issue.
PC cards and monitors (PGX is really a PC card) use a lower drive
on the sync lines and can only drive a 2K Ohm load.
"real" sun cards can drive a 75 Ohm load, and the Sun monitors
use this (CRT's at least).
You need a buffered adapter cable so the pgx sync can be amplified.
Sun made one that also converts from HD15 to 13W3.

Nope. It still blanks no matter what resolution I set it to.

Hmm ... I think I'd be better off just throwing out the PGX32 -- it's
not a very good card in any case. Do you happen to know if the
Creator-3D (FFB2+) UPA cards work in the U80? I see that it's not
"officially" supported, but a little googling shows that some people
are using them....

I doubt you'll have trouble with it.

I can't say I remember that I've put an FFB2+ card in a U80, however.
But I've had that card in numerous U60's (same vintage as U80,
but only 2 processors), and had no problems.
I've also used it in SB1000's (even later model, and also
with multiple processors).
In fact, that card has been pretty solid in any system I've every put it in.
It's what I'd drop in to get back to a safe system when other things
were failing and I was yanking all the other cards out.
I even accidentally pulled one out of a SB1000 once while
it was powered up, and it didn't fry it.
