I have a SS 5 that I'd like to replace with a Ultra 60. My plan is to
purchase a used Ultra 60 on eBay. Some of the Ultra 60's I've seen do
not have video cards. The majority of the time the machine will be
used as a server (files, web) for my classroom, so I'm not too
concerned about graphics performance. In fact, once the system is
configured, I'll probably turn the graphical login off.

My question is can I reuse the graphics card I currently have in my SS
5 in the Ultra 60? In looking at sunsolve.sun.com, I'd say the answer
is no, but I want to make sure.

No.. The Ultra 60 uses a UPA interface for the graphics card. It's
entirely possible to do the whole installation via the serial console
without any card at all though.

Or you can use a PCI one like an Elite or the ATI-type ones....

No - SS5's had Sbus slots, U60's have UPA and PCI - graphics cards can
be either type (UPA are faster/more expensive, PCI are slower/cheaper).

Used, guaranteed Creator 3D cards at $15 or $25 are not all that
expensive.

Make sure you get one that's a "vertical UPA" card, and not the older
"horizontal UPA" card that fit into Ultra1's and such (h-UPA look
more like Sbus cards, and vUPA look more like big PCI cards).

You don't necessarily need a "3D" creator, if that saves some $$.
It just gives you more memory to do 3D operations, and possibly
hi-res video (> 1280x1024). It didn't seem like either of these
were your priorities.
