Default Questions regarding remote console and v880

Hi,

I have a question regarding the use of serial ports to access a Sun Server
(SunFire v880 to be precise) which also has a graphical head as well as a
RSC card: currently we have a RSC connection set up as a console, but would
eventually like to switch to using a Remote Annex 2000 to manage remote
servers (as our other remote server does't have a RSC card).

I am currently experimenting with different settings on our Remote Annex
2000 to connect to said v880.

As per (some) documentation, I did

set port=1 type hardwired mode cli
set port=2-8 type dial_in mode slave
set port=1-8 imask_7bits Y
set port=1-8 speed 9600

and rebooted the console, but when I try to connect to port 4 on remote
console, I don't get a prompt:

% telnet 192.168.226.182 5004
Trying 192.168.226.182...
Connected to 192.168.226.182.
Escape character is '^]'.

but then nothing happens. I know that the cable is OK (got it from Sun
directly) and that used to work in our local environment here, but we had
to restore the factory settings on it (nobody knew su password, sigh) and
now it doesn't work.

Can I have access to RSC and serial port A at the same time? Is there
anything on the v880 itself that need to be changed? Any other settings on
annex that need changing?

TIA, Dragan

There can be only one !
The RSC is a very stupid card compared to the more modern ALOM of the
VXXX machines.

I would connect the annex to the RSC card.
What is the problem?

The one biggest issue I have with RSC is that it cannot be used for
installations (unlike ALOM).

That's a different stuff. E.g.

admin : show port=2

Port 2:

Port Generic Parameters

mode: slave location: ""
type: dial_in term_var: ""
prompt: "" speed: 9600
data_bits: 8 stop_bits: 1
parity: none max_session_count: 3
allow_broadcast: Y broadcast_direction: port
imask_7bits: Y cli_imask7: Y
ps_history_buffer: 0 banner: Y

[the rest snipped]

Thanks, but does it mean that there is no way to connect to the serial port
A of v880 as long as RSC acts as a console? It doesn't have to react as a
console.

Hm, I didn't think about that. Yes that could be a possibility. Except that
I'll need a null modem cable with 2 RJ45 ends.

But can it be used for the OS upgrade? My understanding was that, once it's
up and running, you can do everything with it you can do with a normal
console.

Thanks and bye, Dragan

There is no problem hooking up a serial port while rsc is console,
it wont be console though. I guess that it means that it wont be
suitable for OBP-work etc.

You just have to enable "getty" on that port.
Use admintool or smc for that if not already running.

This would be my favourite choice, full controll from the annex and
perhaps also the network port. I think you can find a wiring scheme
on sunsolve.

Yes, I believe so.

Thanks. For debugging purposes that's good enough.

Hm, that's a tricky one. I see

$ pmadm -l
PMTAG PMTYPE SVCTAG FLGS ID <PMSPECIFIC>
zsmon ttymon ttya u root /dev/term/a I - /usr/bin/login - 9600 ldterm,ttcompat ttya login: - tvi925 y #
zsmon ttymon ttyb u root /dev/term/b I - /usr/bin/login - 9600 ldterm,ttcompat ttyb login: - tvi925 y #

but I have no clue how to enable getty there. Smc is too slow over that
connection and therefore unusable.

I guess I'll need to do some man page reading here :-(

Thanks for your help so far.

OK, after reading the excellent Celeste's Tutorial on Solaris 2.x Modems
and Terminals (at
http://www.stokely.com/unix.serial.p...es/modem.html), I figured
out that I need to remove /dev/term/a setting and change it to accept a
terminal there:

# pmadm -r -p zsmon -s ttya
# /usr/sbin/pmadm -a -p zsmon -s ttya -i root -fu -v `/usr/sbin/ttyadm -V` \
-m "`/usr/sbin/ttyadm -l conttyH -p "annex login: " \
-d /dev/term/a -T vt100 -i 'terminal disabled' -s /usr/bin/login -S y`"

And now it works! E.g.

$ telnet 192.168.226.182 5004
Trying 192.168.226.182...
Connected to 192.168.226.182.
Escape character is '^]'.

annex login:

Now, I don't know if this is going to interfere with /dev/console, this is
something to be found out.
