you might try setting the OBP back to defaults: ISTR that was <stop+N>?

BTW, when you later connect to the serial-A, I would disconnect the
keyboard, to make sure that it outputs to the serial port. Once you see
stuff happening, then you can play with the permutations & combinations.

FWIW, I don't think you would see anything (disk spin, kbd light flash) if
the CPU were bad, but I'm not sure. I'd say it is likely that your output
is going "somewhere else" (where you don't expect), or you have bad video.

Hmm, ISTR I had a Sparc-20 which behaved "differently" with the VSIMM in
it. I think it refused to output to the serial-A (even with keyboard
detached?), or some such? I don't remember the exact circumstances. In my
case, the video from the VSIMM was good, so I didn't worry about it.
