You need a suitable boot prom - the older ones are not suitable for
HyperSPARCs. Quite what version you need is unknown to me, but a search
of the web will find it. The later versions added support for faster and
faster HyperSPARCs.

I have the latest OBP (2.25) and have run quad 125 MHz HyperSPARCs under
Solaris and duals under Redhat Linux. (Never bothered trying quads under
Linux, but I'm sure it would work).

As for NetBSD and OpenBSD, check the documentation, where they will list
what CPUs are compatible.

To the best of my knowledge, FreeBSD is not supported on sun4m like the
SS20, no matter what CPU you have. Again, just check the documentation
on the FreeBSD site.

i think the sun system handbook mentions something along the number
2.22, but i would get 2.25 just to be sure.

there is a version made particlarly for the ross hypersparcs: 2.25R.
the 2.25 will work but allegedly not as well. (when i went to buy
one for a ross cpu system, the seller asked which cpu and provided
the 2.5R.)

I migth be wrong, but I belive that is only needed for the 180 and 200
MHz devices and not the slower ones.

Yes, and that version is impossible to find as a ROM image..

However I use 2.25 and as you say it works, tha only problem AFAIK is
that it takes a Loooooong time to coldboot..
