| Hi, I would like to connect an ADIC 100 tape library with LTO-2 tape drives ( SCSI LVD interface ) to a UE 4000 server. I only found PCI LVD adapters ( options X2222A and X6758A ), but the I/O board ( X2612 ) in my UE 4000 server is SBus based. Is there such thing as a SBus LVD SCSI adapter ? If not : Is there a reliable way to convert LVD to either HVD / Fiber Channel or iSCSI ? thanks, bart |

LVD is compatible with SE, it will should autodetect. Transfer speed will be reduced. -- My real address is crn (at) netunix (dot) com WARNING all messages containing attachments or html will be silently deleted. Send only plain text. |

Not as such, however all LVD devices are backwards compatible to SE, so any SE SCSI cards will work. Only catch is that because it's SE you need to keep the cable lengths within SE limits, which means max distances of a few metres. Scott |

Oh, I see. But the reason I needed the LTO-2 tape drives was for the max. speed of 70 MB/s. Our 'older' LTO-1 are limited to 30 MB/s. ( 100 GB/h ) thanks Bart. |

( 100 GB/h ) In that case you will need to back up the E4000 to a PCI based machine using gigabit ether and then to tape. I always prefer to use a backup server anyway, by backing up to the backup server overnight then backing that up to tape during the day you get 3 major advantages :- 1) The ability to do a fast restore from disk for recent files. 2) No tape changing during a night shift. 3) The ability to automate replacement of a failed root disk by combining jumpstart with postinstall scripts. -- My real address is crn (at) netunix (dot) com WARNING all messages containing attachments or html will be silently deleted. That is exactly our configuration. The UE4000 is the 'backup server'for 40 other systems. During the night we backup the 'clients' to the local disks on the UE4000. ( +/- 1 TB ) When the disks become full, the savesets are automatically staged to tape. I am going to take a look at a small SunFire Server ( they come with multiple gigabit ethernet ports and Ultra160Scsi SE/LVD standard ), and use it as a 'gateway' to the tape-devices. Thanks for your advice. Bart. |

BTDTGTTS. Good move if you can find one. They are a tad more scarce than hens teeth. Very few were ever sold. OTOH, acara.co.uk might be worth a phone call. -- My real address is crn (at) netunix (dot) com WARNING all messages containing attachments or html will be silently deleted. Send only plain text. |

Good move if you can find one. For those of you just joining us, BTDTGTTS expands to "Been There, Done That, Got The T Shirt." We now return you to our regularly-scheduled Usenet anarchy. Or just replace the E4000 altoghether with a V240, better performance and so cheap that you cant afford to wait. The E4000 will have issues juicing up those fast drives. The V240 spots quad gigabit ports for all network needs! /wfr Fredrik -- Fredrik Lundholm dol @ ce.chalmers.se |
