Default sparc 10 crash - help needed

my sparc 10 crashed today. the main symptom is a lack of symptoms.

i removed the keynoard and monitor, attached them to another sparcsattion
and it boots just fine.

if i tip to the dead sparc 10, i connect but get no response when i
power reset.

when i reattach the monitor and keyboard, and power on with stop-d
keys held down, the leds on the keyboard go on and off two times, then
everything halts with only the caps lock key illuminated. thus the
POST does not run. the monitor's signal light keeps flashing - it is a
GM 20D10.

is this a power supply failure, a boot prom failure or an nvram
failure? any clues as to how to test?

Prognosis negative.

If the PS fans spin up it may not be the PS, unless only part
of it is damaged. Was there a power spike or anything at the
time? Look up the info-doc for the keyboard LED diagnostics
at http://sunsolve.sun.com. That might give you a clue.

i had changed nothing. the machine was in use, however.

Try to remove all internals HD... It could be an hd controler failure
that shortcut the main power supply. I've experienced this some months
ago in my SS20 with a 4,5 Gb Seagate drive.

Hope this will help

for the following reasons, i do not believe it is the power supply:

i reported the crash a few days ago. i now have the maintenance
manual, and it confirms that the power supply is fine: both test
criteria are satisfied: the led on front of the case lights up, and
the keyboard emits its desired aqueak.

however, there is no output either to the monitor or to serial port A
when i power on while holding down stop-d. the heyboard LEDs go on and
off twice, and then i am left with the cap locks led on permanently,
and no other signs of life.

this leads me to think that the boot PROM is fried. would a fried boot
prom cause a crash in mid-operation? a fried boot PROM would fail in a
manner similar to what i have described.

Perhaps, but i think it could be a bruned hd controler. Do you try to
remove them ?

i picked up a functioning ss10 for $20. it lacked a hard drive.

i moved the old machine's hard drive to the new machine and it booted
just fine. i put the drive back in the old machine and switched, one
at a time, the mbus/cpu and the frame buffer. no change. i can't
work it the other way (putting things into the new machine) because
the the new machine has the 2.12 prom, the old one has a hypersparc
and the 2.25R prom.

tonight i will perform a complete transplant, including the 2.25R prom
to the new machine and give up on the old one. the odds seem to favor
a mainboard defect.
