| I've rescued an old Sparcstation SS10 from the trash. It appears to be in fairly good condition, but doesn't boot, giving the following information: SS10 (1x390Z50) ROM Rev 2.9, 32MB RAM Boot device: /iommu/sbus/espdma@f,400000/esp@f,800000/sd@3,0 Data Access Error The hard-drive sounds a bit raspy and is probably on its last legs. Are there recommended currently available SCSI drives that could replace it? Anyway, beyond the above problem, I was wondering if anyone had an opinion on the usefulness of this particular ancient workstation. Beyond use as a firewall, could the SS10 with this little amount of RAM run any version of Solaris and X well enough to do development work? Thanks in advance for all help and opinions. -- Dan (reply to email if possible) |

Any 50-pin, single ended SCS drive will do. > Anyway, beyond the above problem, I was wondering if anyone had an > opinion on the usefulness of this particular ancient workstation. > Beyond use as a firewall, could the SS10 with this little amount of > RAM run any version of Solaris and X well enough to do development > work? With only 32 MB of RAM? It would only be a waste of time. For anything useful, you'll want at least 256 MB, especially if you're planning to run X and any recent version of Solaris. -- Rich Teer, SCNA, SCSA President, Rite Online Inc.
