Strange Issue @ 24 bit on SS20

1. I have an SS20 w/a CG14 (SX) framebuffer.
2. I have read and done everything on in the framebuffer FAQ.
3. I have a 4 MB VSIMM.
4. My display is set to screen:r1152x900x76 in printenv.

The issue -

When I login using CDE I get 24-bit color.

When I login (same user) but chose GNOME 2 I get 8-bit color.

I want 24-bit under GNOME. Thoughts?
