| We have a Pinnacle Micro APEX MOD drive attached to an Ultra2 running Solaris 2.6. This storage solution has served our researchers well for a long time (since before I was hired). Unfortunately, media for this drive is no longer manufactured and it is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain new media (last time, I had to order refurbished disks). So, I'm looking for a new MOD drive. I'll be putting it on a Sun Blade 1000 running Solaris 9. The HP 9100mx and the Sony RMO-S561/S both offer 9.1GB capacity and work with ISO standard media. The $64 milliion question though is do they work under Solaris? I called and asked HP. Their reply was the typical, "we've never tested that configuration, so we can't guarantee that it will work." I suspect I'd get a similar answer from Sony. Is anyone out there using these drives successfully under Solaris? Did you need any third party software to make it work? Any pitfalls I should know about? -Matt |
