If I want an AMD based box why am I going to pay a premium for a x86 clone with a Sun badge? I gather that the Opteron is only available in Sun badged machines but how do Sun reconcile this product range with the USIII based workstations and servers? I hope that it's not the beginning of the end for SPARC/Sun products ... Regards, AT |

The latest inclusion of the AMD boxes allows Sun to competitively target and penetrate the low-end workstation and server market. However much we might love the sparc platform, the truth is that X86 and X86/64 have the biggest market share. If Sun offers these boxes, they would offer hardware and software support as well...which is what the companies would buy. Honestly, if I have to buy (now or in future) an opteron machine either from: Sun, IBM or even Dell for any use, I would prefer Sun or IBM. I might save some money with Dell, but their product/customer support is one of the worst in the world (http://babyurl.com/2tWPrO). Nevertheless, if you get out of OS-evangelism, you'll see that this was a smart move on Sun's part. My 2 cents. -Bruno |

| <snip> > I would assume a better product/profit margin. It seems to me that a lot of their woes relate to their excessive list prices for new SPARC H/W. With the new workstations they 'appear' to be trying to make the H/W more affordable. I find it a bit odd when they talk about the reduced TCO of USIII based servers compared with USII stuff. At work we use secondary market E3500's predominantly. For the price of entry level Sun support we can have a couple of machines in the wings as cold standbys. Sorry got a bit off topic there ... > might love the sparc platform, the truth is that X86 and X86/64 have the > biggest market share. If Sun offers these boxes, they would offer Yup - and there are a plethora of vendors supplying these boxes already ... > Nevertheless, if you get out of OS-evangelism, you'll see that this was > a smart move on Sun's part. Nothing to do with the OS - unless you're implying that no one is going to buy the machines with x86 Solaris installed ;-) Regards, AT |

Believe me, there are many on the lists who do the same. After the .com crash, the glut of sun hardware and this secondary market brought some great deals and good hardware at more affordable prices. |

I'd buy IBM, becouse they spent so much time with Intel, and Intel clone stuff. SUN spent so much time with SPARC. IBM has more expeience with x86 things, while SUN has more with SPARC. I do not know why even Solaris for x86 exists, when one can have the powerfull SPARC CPU. SUN claims, that they are doing high end computing stuff. So why messing around with "crapy" x86? Levente |
