| Hi, I am looking for a small (max 12, preferably 6 disks) external chassis for SCA disks (preferable from Sun) that is capable of handling SCSI LVD-160 or even LVD-320. Unfortunately the Multipack is hardwired in a way that it cannot be forced to run in LVD mode. And the same is true for the A1000, as it has an internal controller. But what about D1000 and D130. The S1 is also an alternative, but I haven't seen one on ebay for quite some time now, and I really would prefer a small price tag, as it is for home/private use. So does anybody have an idea for an alternate solution? TIA, Thomas |

The *drives* in it (like the Multipacks) are LDV drives, but the interface provided to the computer is HVD only. > The S1 is also an alternative, but I haven't seen one on ebay > for quite some time now, and I really would prefer a small price tag, as > it is for home/private use. You're talking to someone else with the same restrictions. :-) > So does anybody have an idea for an alternate solution? Is there a real reason why you can't (or don't want to) use the Multipack? It can be quite fast -- even the ones not explicitly marked "ULTRA" seem to be capable to handle the Ultra speeds. I have an Ultra tagged MultiPack, and I like it very much, because it has just the right size, not to noisy, and it uses the regular Sun SCA hard disk frames. I have two disks in this MultiPack, but unfortunately it is limited to a maximum transfer rate of 40MB/s, which is really sad, as each of those two disk can handle much more than that. I have been looking around for some kind of SCA chassis that can handle LVD160 or higher, but the only thing I could find are those two or three slot high SCA backplanes that can be integrated into a PC. But my machine only has one spare slot free, so I really seem to be out of luck concerning this situation... I have thought about using a generic external SCSI box and inserting one of those SCA backplanes for PCs. But I don't really like this solution, because these white box chassis are usually not worth the money they cost. So any third party offering would be great, but I couldn't find one... - Thomas |
