Default Sun Ultra5 scsi ! Some little problems

Hello to all.
Finally my sym22801 controller is arrived.
I first installed NetBSD-3.0 just for a fast test on a Quantum Viking2 9 gb
scsi (booting from the IDE-CD).
Now, I have done an nvalias for the Quantum Disk scsi and then a setenv
boot-device and it boots perfectly ! ;-)
But... I have a little problem.
Today , I tried to add a scsi cdrom (Teac CD532s SCSI) but I can't boot from
it. I think I have to put a correct address for this cdrom.
This is my output from "show-disks" :
/pci@1f,0/pci@1/scsi@1/disk
/pci@1f,0/pci@1/scsi@1,1/disk
And follows the list of ide devices.
If I do "probe-scsi-all", I have the following output :

/pci@1f,0/pci@1/scsi@1,1

/pci@1f,0/pci@1/scsi@1
Target 0
Unit 0 Disk Qauntum Viking II 9.1 WLS
Target 4
Unit 0 Removable ReadOnly device TEAC CDROM CD-532S
ok

I think my problem is on that "Target 4" , I think I have to put something
to boot from this "4". I googled a bit, but I can't solve my problem.
Can someone help me ?
Thanks to all !

best is to change the SCSI ID on the CD to 6, 4 is often used for tapes.

Hi - I'm no expert on a pci card scsi equipped U5, but if this follows
"normal" Sun scsi practice then at the ok prompt you should be able to
type "boot cdrom" once the scsi id is 6 and it'll just work... assuming
no one's been playing with the nvram/obp settings before you!

If not, again at the ok prompt, type devalias cdrom and see what it
says. Match your CDROM to it!

Hopefully others with more expertise will post here too but this might
get you going now... Good luck!

it says that cdrom is referred to ide cdrom.
But I resolved the problem :-)
I have put cdromscsi on ID 6.
Then , I have done :
nvalias mycdrom /pci@1f,0/pci@1/scsi@1/disk@0,6:f
And now my Ultra5 boots correctly from SCSI CDrom too ;-)
Thanks to all for support ;-)

Good, I was used about to tell you to check what sector size the CDROM
was set to, all PC drives are set to 2048? and Sun disks are set to 512
bytes per sector which will affect booting.

Good to know next time

This evening i will try also :
- Plextor PX40tsi
- TEac CDR-56s
- Yamaha crw6416s
All of them scsi of course, and with the cdrom NetBSD-3.0 install.
When I'll done all the tests, I'll reinstall Solaris on my Ultra5.
The only problem ? The little space for the scsi cables (68 pin for HDD and
50pin for cd-unit) inside the small case of the Ultra5...
I have to do something to fix this... perhaps I can buy shorter scsi cables
somewhere.
Hello!

I would worry about airflow, a U5 is not big it would be much better if
you had a U10!

The disk needs proper cooling!

I agree with you..
I was thinking at the same problem
Maybe I will use the front 3 1/2 bay to add a small rheobus . In this
manner, I can add some fans (with 3pin connectors) on the internal. I'm
thinking about this :
http://www.cluboverclocker.com/revie...antec/NXP-305/
I have the same type (but for 5,25 on pc too) and it has 18watts per channel
and very cool blue leds ;-)
I think it can be a good idea.
Maybe I can add a blue led fan for the ultrasparc and have a modded ultra5
:-P
But... my dream is finding a panel for 3 1/2 that can have some knob to
control fans and an usb frontal port too (adding a pci usb card that support
internal pins, maybe one with Nec chipset). There was a panel like this in a
shop near my city, I have to find out about this.
Hello !

Note:

MTBF of fans << MTBF of disks

so is it not uncommon for a fan to die taking the disk with it. Even two
fans are likely to die before a disk does.

Unfortunately, the MTBF of disks is defined in a very odd way, but the
fact remains disks are a lot more reliable than small fans.

I think you will find this a bit more useful than all those flashing
lights, which add heat. The code below will allow you to monitor disk
temperature and take take what action you fancy based on that.

http://groups.google.co.uk/group/com...3f8f97188185f9

There are more advanced systems (smartmontools for example), but I use
that bit of C in the link above to monitor temperature. I have scripts
that will shut a machine down if the disks overheat.
