| For pure desktop use with some very minor web server tasks, plus to act as host to a SunPCi card, I am looking for a comparison between the 440Mhz Ultra10 and the 650Mhz Sunblade 150. Years ago I favored my Ultra10 over the 550Mhz Sunblade 150s we got at work because the U10's CPU's cache was bigger and, for me, the Ultra10 seemed overall more robust and better built. Despite the IDE disks my Ultra10 still felt like my old Ultra2, whereas the SB150 reminded me of the Dell PC I was intollerably made to use I do not however have any knowledge of the 650Mhz SB150 or its comparison to the Ultra10. Any advice? Thanks. |

I can understand you feeling for U10 ahead of Blade 100/150 in some ways, also the U10 is abit bigger inside which is good I think. Performance vice I would put the Blade150 ahead of the U10, sligtly faster CPU, ~20% I would say in a compute task but most important I would say is better onboard graphics, USB/Firewire and best 2GB RAM with standard and still available PC133 memorys. U10 can only use 1GB RAM and using JDS that is not enough! Get the Blade(any Blade 100/150/1000/1500/2000/2500) depending on your budget. /michael |

Not to forget the faster IDE port and built-in USB. The SB150 is even faster... Benjamin |

My Ultra 10 was my first personally owned machine and for things like compiling C++ and graphics performance, it was good as long as it had a Creator or Elite 3D. Disk and cd-rom I/O however, simply BLEW. If you research older discussions on ultra 5/10 you'll find out the IDE implementation is terrible and they tended to ship with slow hard disks and cd drives. Some people reported being quite satisfied with an Ultra 10 with SCSI card and all new scsi peripherals inside. But by the time you spend that much money you can now have a used SB1000 which is much faster and also has a very cool illuminated Sun logo, which makes all your computing more pleasant and also makes instant friends on the net when you mention it.
