Default Testing RAID 5 hot spares

How does one go about testing RAID 5 hot spares replacing a failed drive ...
without actually failing a drive so that you can still use it again in the array ( 3310 ) ?

You yank out a drive so a spare takes over?

Is there reason why you can't do that? It would probably be the best
test of test of the system. You would also be able to double-check
your procedure for inserting a drive and bringing the array back to
full operation. (You do have a written procedure in case of
emergencies, right?)
