| 50120 Re: Solaris 2.5.1 on U60: - old app *requires* Solaris 2.5.1 (only certified on that OS version) - According to sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/Systems/ info, Ultra-2 & Ultra-30 are not certified for / supported with 2x18GB disks. But Ultra-60 is. Have searched in sun forums & google newsgroup archives but not got a clear answer yet to my below question. http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub...s/U60/U60.html says "For processor speeds of 419 MHz or faster, the miminum supported versions are Solaris 2.5.1 = HW 11/97(2.6 5/98)" (then Solaris 2.6 stuff) "Operating Environment Installation CD February 2000 (704-7076-10) must be used before installing these OS revisions." In comp.unix.solaris in 2002-03-27 Alan Coopersmith (alanc@csua.berkeley.edu) said: > The ultra 60 requires at least the 11/97 HW update version of 2.5.1, and if > your processor is faster than 400Mhz, you need the special installation CD > as well. Is it true that Solaris 2.5.1 can loaded on / run well on U60 with processor speed *less*than* 419MHz?? It's not quite clear from the Sun U60 page if that is true. What Alan C says seems to imply it is true. I think it is true but sure don't want to waste time finding out the hard way (after production system deployed & becomes flakey) it's not true. We would prefer to use a U-60 we have at 296 MHz or 360 MHz, saving the faster 450MHz processor U60 for other uses. Could Sun or experienced people say for sure? |

That's silly. A SCSI disk is a SCSI disk, and can be connected to any physically compatible interface. My Ultra-2 has run 2x18GB disks for years. > Have searched in sun forums & google newsgroup archives but not got > a clear answer yet to my below question. > > http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub...s/U60/U60.html says > "For processor speeds of 419 MHz or faster, the miminum supported versions > are Solaris 2.5.1 = HW 11/97(2.6 5/98)" (then Solaris 2.6 stuff) "Operating > Environment Installation CD February 2000 (704-7076-10) must be used before > installing these OS revisions." > > In comp.unix.solaris in 2002-03-27 Alan Coopersmith > (alanc@csua.berkeley.edu) said: > >>The ultra 60 requires at least the 11/97 HW update version of 2.5.1, and if >>your processor is faster than 400Mhz, you need the special installation CD >>as well. > > > Is it true that Solaris 2.5.1 can loaded on / run well on U60 with > processor speed *less*than* 419MHz?? > > It's not quite clear from the Sun U60 page if that is true. > What Alan C says seems to imply it is true. > > I think it is true but sure don't want to waste time finding out the hard > way (after production system deployed & becomes flakey) it's not true. > > We would prefer to use a U-60 we have at 296 MHz or 360 MHz, saving the > faster 450MHz processor U60 for other uses. > > Could Sun or experienced people say for sure? > > |

Obviously if your management doesn't want to "take the risk", this is moot. > - According to sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/Systems/ info, Ultra-2 & > Ultra-30 are not certified for / supported with 2x18GB disks. > But Ultra-60 is. That's because Sun (like the vendor of your app) certifies operation with the peripherals available at the time the machine was sold. So if you don't want to run the risk of running with "uncertified" configurations, you should stick to what Sun certified as religiously as you stick to what the app vendor certified. That being said, all SCSI Suns will accept larger disks than those available at the time they were sold. But it's not "certified to work". You assume the risk. > Have searched in sun forums & google newsgroup archives but not got > a clear answer yet to my below question. > > http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub...s/U60/U60.html says > "For processor speeds of 419 MHz or faster, the miminum supported > versions are Solaris 2.5.1 = HW 11/97(2.6 5/98)" (then Solaris 2.6 > stuff) "Operating Environment Installation CD February 2000 > (704-7076-10) must be used before installing these OS revisions." > > In comp.unix.solaris in 2002-03-27 Alan Coopersmith > (alanc@csua.berkeley.edu) said: > > The ultra 60 requires at least the 11/97 HW update version of 2.5.1, > > and if your processor is faster than 400Mhz, you need the special > > installation CD as well. > > Is it true that Solaris 2.5.1 can loaded on / run well on U60 with > processor speed *less*than* 419MHz?? It's pretty clear, no? You need at least the 11/97 version of 2.5.1, together with the special CD. That combination is "certified" by Sun, and thus it will run. Compared to Solaris 9, 2.5.1 will not run well, and because it's obsolete, you won't get any support for it. > It's not quite clear from the Sun U60 page if that is true. > What Alan C says seems to imply it is true. It's true, but if it doesn't work, I doubt Sun will rush to your aid; after all, 2.5.1 has been obsolete for a while. > I think it is true but sure don't want to waste time finding out the > hard way (after production system deployed & becomes flakey) it's not > true. If you're looking for people who still run 2.5.1 on their U60, you're not going to find many. You'll have to try it, test it, and then put it into production. Nothing anyone says will guarantee that you won't have problems. Personally, I'd test the application on Solaris 9, and see if it runs correctly - chances are overwhelmingly that it will, and your U60 will be far happier with 9 than with 2.5.1. > We would prefer to use a U-60 we have at 296 MHz or 360 MHz, saving the > faster 450MHz processor U60 for other uses. > > Could Sun or experienced people say for sure? No. I haven't run your app on your U60 with 2.5.1. No-one has, so no-one can be sure. You'll have to stick your neck out. But if it makes you happy, then yes, I've worked with a U60 that had 2.5.1 on it, so I can confirm it can be done, though it only had two 9GB disks :-) Take care, -- Stefaan -- As complexity rises, precise statements lose meaning, and meaningful statements lose precision. -- Lotfi Zadeh |
