| Hi All, Can anyone comment on whether one can buy satisfactory aftermarket parts for the ultra 40? The disk looks to come in some kind of sled which I'm not familiar with (or is it the same as in older Sun machines?). What about graphics cards? Can I buy a minimal spec ultra 40 from Sun and then count on upgrading it with lots of SATA disks from other vendors and perhaps a graphics card direct from Nvidia? I read it can now take up to 8 hard drives, sounds like a pretty nice home ZFS server! I have one of these machines at work and quite like it, but obviously getting non-sun parts for a machine at the office is probably a harder sell than going the normal route. Memory is standard and you can buy from Crucial for instance. CPU should not be a problem in upgrading, heatsink could be I don't know how they look on a Sun or standard AMD but it should not be a big problem. So go ahead! Oh yes, order a second backplane(Second Drive Cage ) directly for disks, they are not expensive $55 then you can add up to 8 drives not bad for a WS! /michael |
