| The charity recycling project where I volunteer has been donated a Sun Ultra5. It's in near perfect condition, but doesn't complete the boot process. It looks to be a 400MHz machine, with four 64MB DIMMs and an LSI Logic SCSI card. The hard disk has been removed, but everything else seems to be present. I'm testing it with a Type 6 keyboard. The immediate symptom is that there's no display on the monitor. I hooked up a dumb terminal to the serial port, and enabled the full POST. The POST checks run fine, and report a pass. The system then tries to boot normally, but hangs... Can anyone suggest what might be wrong, or further testing I can do to help diagnose the problem? Thanks for your help. I expect it to turn the monitor on, though, and get to the OpenBoot prompt. I've worked on two other Ultra 5s in the past, and they've reached OpenBoot without an HD connected. Does this one need a disk before it will initialise? Nick. -- Nick Chalk ................. once a Radio Designer Confidence is failing to understand the problem. |

Unfortunately, that doesn't change the response. The boot still hangs at the same point. What confuses me is that the POST sequence runs fine, and the tests pass. Thanks Darren. I'll try pulling out the SCSI card, and doing a Stop-N boot. Nick. -- Nick Chalk ................. once a Radio Designer Confidence is failing to understand the problem. |
