| I got my hands on a W2100z recently. This is my first workstation and the first time I've ever used SCSI. It got a U320 Adaptec AIC-7902 controller. The one SCSI drive in the system is a 73 GB Seagate ST373307LW. It's on channel B as device ID 0. The cable that's on is the only SCSI cable I have currently. It has another connector available and I guess what is called a terminator at the end. Okay, I can get my hands on an identical SCSI drive--exact same drive. So I have 2 questions: 1) If I put this in there I should just set it up like the other one, except jumper it to a device ID other than 0? Also, I read something about powering the terminator or something, which I assume the other drive is already doing, so I should set this one to not do this? Does it matter which one is closest to the terminator? If you have anything to add, please do--I'm obviously totally lost. 2) In the SCSI setup utility it has a choice that says Host RAID Enabled/Disabled. It's currently disabled, of course. I don't see anything that says anything like RAID 0,1,etc., so I wonder what this means. If I enable that then can I have hardware RAID 0? If so, would it be even better to get another cable and put the second drive on the A channel? I'd RTFM, but I can find any docs on this thing on either adaptec's or sun's site. |

But the manufacturer doesn't know what contoller you are using, how many drives you have, etc. so they can't be too specific either. I guess I'll just figure it out; Let me ask one final question. If I get the setup wrong is there any chance of damage? |

Otherwise the worst thing you can do is get conflicting SCSI IDs. Basically, the docs tell you what ID to use for the bay you are installing into. You just have to make sure to set the drive to that ID. Seagate's documentation on setting ID's looks clear to me. http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/...100195488b.pdf Elias |

At any rate, it looks like I'll have my new drive in bay 5 on the closest connector to the controller and set to 1, my current drive in bay 4 on the next connector and set (still) to 0. I think that's about it except for the powering-the-terminator thing. I'll get it. Thanks much! |

That's too bad, it's such a cleaner interface, no messing with jumpers/termination, no extra power cables/connectors, much better for hot swapping, etc... Not to mention cheaper aftermarket SCA drives once they're flooded on to the market as the next drive model is released. |
