| I'm trying to find out if my somewhat old hardware will be OK on Solaris 10. My biggest concern is the Sun PCI II Pro card (733 MHz Celeron). Why I worry I do not know, as the thing is so damm slow, but it saves the hassle of starting a PC some times. The page at http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/specs.jsp has a section 'Solaris 10 System Requirements' There's a link to the Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) but despite the above page implying this is for SPARC and x86, when you click the link you realise its just about x86. I can't seem to find out a list of SPARC hardware supported. I know of course Sun 4m has been removed, but what else ?? Does anyone know of any issues I might have with this lot. * Sun Ultra 80, 4 x 450 MHz, 4GB RAM. * Plextor SCSI CD-RW. * SunPCI II pro card (733 MHz Celeron) - my biggest concern. * Dual Sun PCI SCSI controller. * Creator 3D, running 1600x1200 at 60 Hz. * DEC HVD SCSI card * A preference for CDE over GNOME!!! I know the Creator3D is not supported in the Ultra 80, but it works. I guess the same will likely be true on Solaris 10. Any extra known issues, beyond the rare (but known) problems with the card in a U80. I'm guessing the DEC SCSI card will be OK. It uses the same chipset as a Sun card. The chip set, and its $12 price, was the reason I chose to buy one. It controls my StoreEDGE L9 with no problems. Obviously nobody is going to know for sure, but are there likely to be problems, given it works in Solaris 9 with no hassles? Anyone running Matlab 6.5 Release 13 and/or Mathematica 4.0 and can confirm if there are any problems? I'm not likely to do an upgrade for a few months at least (I'm never too keen on upgrading operating systems). Am I likely to see any gains or losses in performance with the above hardware. It's a home machine, which for the most part sits pretty idle, but sometimes the CPUs are flat out for a few days doing some computation. |

It's still there. You can choose. mfg Dennis -- Cats are smarter than dogs. You can't make eight cats pull a sled through the snow. |

That is why I am never too keen on OS upgrades, and tend to leave it a few months at least. |

What software? I thought Solaris 9 was the last supported one? Does the SunPCI-3 software also work with SunPCI-2 boards? Mit freundlichen Grüßen Frank-Christian Krügel |

I find it hard to belive Sun have not produced one, but I can't find it. Of course 'supported' and 'it works' are often two very different things. I'm aware the Creator3D framebuffer is not supported in the Ultra 80 (I only realised this a year or so after I bought one). But it has worked fine for me. Caspar Dik said there are some rare issues with the U80/Creator3D combination (I'm not quoting his exact words), but for me it is OK. Likewise mixing CPU speed in SPARC 20's is not supported, but many have done it. |

Accordingly the SunPCi II/IIpro works ONLY with the package SUNWspci2 (version 2.3.2). A small hack is required, because there are no drivers for Solaris 10 included. Instead of refering to the Sun Hardware Support Forum with numerours posts on this topic, this a link to a brief description (found by a google search) http://blog.ekholm.org/2005/02/04/so...pci-ii-tricks/ I'm pretty sure that there will be Solaris 10 support for the SunPCi III, because the current shipping board (SunPCi IIIpro) uses only a faster cpu than the SunPCi III.
