I have a client who wants to run two environments (one at a time) on
our HPUX box ( 11iv1 and 11iv2 ). I recommended she buy two new drives
(73 Gb mirrored). We then install 11iv2 on the second pair of drives.
then we can shut the machine down and swap drives to change
environments.

What she proposed is to buy one drive (concerned about cost). Then she
would:

1. Pull one of the drives (we will call it "A" ) for 11iv1 out and put
in the new drive in (drive "C"). Install 11iv2 on the mirrored set of
drive C and the other half of the mirrored set (drive "B").

2. Once 11iv2 is installed. To switch back to 11iv1 she wants to take
the original drive ("A") and put it back in with it's original mirror
(drive B) and rebuild the mirror.

So changing environments would be using this drive as a mirrored drive
for both environments.

I hope that is not too confusing.

So my questions are:

1. Is this as crazy/dangerous an idea as it sounds?
2. Any better way to have one machine host 2 different OS versions (
one at a time)?
3. Any place I can get the drives for less than $600 each? (HP 9000, 73
Gb)

yes, any time you boot from 11i or 11.23 you need to recreate mirror but you
need to have disk in mirror?

If you have more than 2 slot on your server, you can easily boot from one HW
PATH with hpux 11i or from another path with hpux 11.23
You can leave one disk with hpux11i and on second path hpux 11.23. If needed
replace disk and make mirror, otherwise leave only one disk with OS.

it. I have worked with him for years.

Go to Solaris 10 instead !
A very capable OS with no licence fee for OS, compiler,
cluster, virtualization,... and run on cheap x86 hardware or
nice CPU like multi-core T2.
HP is very very expensive and you pay for all: OS license
for each core,...

Jason - your description sounds more like a test system than a
production system - I wouldn't expect to be flipping back and forth on
a production system like that. That being the case, if the money for
one more disc was really that big an issue I'd probably eschew the
RAID and just put 11iv1 on one disc and 11iv2 on another disc and not
have to flip discs back and forth.

If this _is_ a production system, convince her to just buy the
additional disc to have two complete mirrors. While breaking and
rebuilding the mirror may be technically feasible, it sounds like a
real, time consuming hassel, and if it is a production system, the
time spend futzing with the mirrors is probably best unspent.
