gnome 1.4 problem

i have installed ximian on my parisc workstation under hp ux the
installation itself went with no problems but when I tried to switch from de
to gnome it would not work at all giving me info that gdm.x does not egsist
after /sbin/init.d/gdm.rc start
i have checked the directory and it is really not there
what is wrong would anyone know?
