| I have an HP 9000 827S. I am unable to find any documentation on the web or at HP's site and I have a few questions that are too basic for the FAQ. I would like to know: How do you connect a serial cable in order to boot the unit? Can I put some sort of plug adapter on a modem cable, as I do with my MicroVAX? What version of HP-UX will it run? Is the RAM compatible with RAM from an Apollo 700 series (it fits in the socket)? What processor does it have? How fast is it? In other words, is this unit worth the trouble to get it running or is it scrap? Thanks in advance for any information. I am unable to find any documentation on the Follow this path: www.itrc.hp.com -> maintenance and support for hp products (on the left) -> product support information -> Hp Server -> select HP 9000 Servers 8xx-Series -> select 827S Server In other words, is this unit worth the trouble ? No. Alain. |

| 827S - - reaches top speed when hurled from high window. There are plenty of D's and K's that can be had for dirt cheap prices that run circles around this old dinosaur. | I have seen some of the replies on this question. I had such a machine myself some years ago. It is a great machine to learn HP-UX and get familiar with HP systems. If you are not looking for performance it is oke. (and the extra heating is just a bonus ;-) ) To answer some of you questions: There is ample information on these systems. I used the HP Partsurfer. Try the following link: http://partsurfer.hp.com/cgi-bin/spi...odel=9000/827S (i hope it will work) Here you can find all the information regarding parts. Just open the case and look for the board or partnumbers. Another usefull resource is the website mentioned in one of the other replies: http://www.openpa.net/ On this bewsite you really can find quite a lot information. Have you tried the following link? http://hpux.tn.tudelft.nl/hppd/sites.html Further more is this newsgroup also a great resource. In order to boot the unit you need a so called mux panel on which you connect a terminal. In most cases this will be a hp700/96 terminal. You need to connect the terminal to port 0. A mux panel has 8 connectors where you can plug modems, terminals and other rs232 peripherals in. If you are willing to pay for the shipping I can offer you a mux panel with cable. On the back of you 827S you will see a big, I would say a 68 pins connector saying someting like "mux" or so. Just send me an email if you are interested (s.van.leersum@hccnet.nl) It will run both HP-UX 10.20 (be aware that you need a special version saying series 800) and HP-UX 11.00 (in 32 bit mode). I am not sure whether it will run Ram from the apollo 700. I bought additional ram in the states (quite expensive to be frankly). I have 384mb ram these days. you are welcome to bid on 128 genuine hp ram if you are interested. The processor you are running is a hp-risc 7100(LC). It runs at 48 mhz. I would say not worth any trouble. As one of the other replies mentioned it is more interesting to get a D class (or even a K class) these days. Besides that you might end up with a faster processor it is also more modern which means that in some cases you can run hp-ux 11.00 in 64 bit (if it has a 8000 series hp-ux processor) or you can run debian linux on it. I expect such a machine will cost you around usd 300 - usd 1000 depending on the configuration. Check ebay.com for interesting offers. There is quite a supply in the states for these types of machines. Well, Hope this will help you! It said: A hardware support agreement or a warranty is required to access this service. -- M J Dowden <mjdowden@panix.com> PGP key: <http://www.panix.com/~mjdowden/keys.shtml> No Microsoft products were used in the preparation or transmission of this message |
