| Has anyone installed Oracle 7.3.4 database on a HP-UX server with 11i as an O/S? We currently have in on HP-UX with 11.00 as the O/S, but I'm not sure if the Oracle 7.3.4 CD will install on the 11i(11.11). Does anyone know if there are any major differences between 11.00 and 11i O/S for the PA-RISC. We would be changing from K460 HP-UX 11.00 with Oracle 7.3.4 (cannot upgrade because of the application)to a rp4xxx or rp7xxx most likely. Thanks in advance, David |

Things you must consider: 1) chances are your existing install is 32 bit which means the app is also 32 bit, 2) 11i on those boxes will be 64 bit and a lot of apps houses didn't play nice when they developed their code (they won't easily port to 64 bit), 3) even if you can install (and get stable) the 32 bit 7.3.4 Oracle on the 64 bit 11i, maybe the best use of the time/money/resources would be to get on a more modern app. |

Or, at least IIRC we were able to do an upgrade by getting the old version of Oracle up on the new servers and only after that migrate the data to a newer version of Oracle. This might have been HP-UX 10.20 -> 11.00/32 though. And, Oracle specifically said at some point that 32-bit Oracle binaries will run on 64-bit HP-UX - 11.00 at least, but that was for a 8.something and I'm not sure if 11.11 was out yet. > 3) even if you can install (and get > stable) the 32 bit 7.3.4 Oracle on the 64 bit 11i, maybe the best use of > the time/money/resources would be to get on a more modern app. Well ... in the best case, the old version will continue to run just fine, it's just the risk that you aren't that lucky. Oh, and I'm not sure that you really want to re-run the installer, just moving the binaries over might be easier. (it certainly was back when the Oracle install CDs were broken and needed lots of manual work to get the install to complete succesfully even on the correct HP-UX version... not sure which Oracle version that was.) -- Mikko Nahkola <mnahkola@trein.ntc.nokia.com> #include <disclaimer.h> #Not speaking for my employer. Do you know off hand, if the new PA-RISC HP servers can still have an 11.00 O/S with the 32/64 bit patches? Our current Oracle 7.3.4 is on the 11.00 O/S with the 32/64 bit patches. If I run the command "/usr/bin/getconf KERNEL_BITS" on our current server it does show 64, so I was thinking that Oracle 7.3.4 should run on 11i, even though it is 32 bit. Thanks for your help. -David |

At this point, you are conducting testing and should proceed with that idea in mind. I know that Oracle and HP won't buy into the idea that this could be a supportable configuration, but then the one you're currently running isn't either. I don't believe the two models of server that you mentioned will support 32 bit operation, so you'll have to run the 64 bit O/S. The interesting thing is that you apparently are already doing just that, so you might have a good chance of making this work. BTW, it doesn't matter that Oracle "plays nice" with the 32/64 situation, all of the applications that run on the Oracle database must also deal with that situation properly. If the local developers didn't follow GABP, then you still have that problem to address. |
