SSRT3460 Network traffic can cause programs to fail

Bulletin provided that it remains complete and intact.

The information in the following Security Bulletin should be
acted upon as soon as possible. Hewlett-Packard Company will
not be liable for any consequences to any customer resulting
from customer's failure to fully implement instructions in this
Security Bulletin as soon as possible.

PROBLEM: Certain network traffic can cause programs to fail.

IMPACT: Potential denial of service

PLATFORM: HP9000 Series 700/800 running HP-UX releases B.11.00,
B.11.11, and B.11.22.

SOLUTION: Install patch or file.

MANUAL ACTIONS: Yes - NonUpdate
HP-UX B.11.22 - Download and install
sys_socket.o.ia.1122
No manual actions for other HP-UX versions.

AVAILABILITY: This bulletin will be revised when a patch
is available for HP-UX B.11.22.

CHANGE SUMMARY: Rev.01 - Added Support Tool Manager patches.

A. Background
Certain network traffic can cause programs to fail. An
example of potentially vulnerable program is diagmond.

**REVISED 01**
-->Note: Critical warnings have been issued against PHNE_28895.
--> An alternative partial solution is available. The
--> following patches will eliminate the problem for
--> diagmond:

--> PHSS_28617 B.11.00
--> PHSS_28618 B.11.11

--> These patches do not address the root cause of the
--> problem, but they will resolve the issue for diagmond.


B. Recommended solution

HP-UX B.11.00 - Install PHNE_28538
-->HP-UX B.11.11 - Install PHNE_28895 (patch has critical
--> warnings)
-->Partial solution (diagmond only):

-->HP-UX B.11.00 - Install PHSS_28617
-->HP-UX B.11.11 - Install PHSS_28618

HP-UX B.11.22 - Download and install sys_socket.o.ia.1122:

Note: There is an ftp defect in IE5 that may result in
a browser hang. To work around this:
- Select Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced
- Un-check the option: [ ] Enable folder view for FTP sites

Verify the cksum or md5 sum:

Install the sys_socket.o.ia.1122 as follows:

[copy sys_socket.o.ia.1122 to a safe
directory such as /etc]

cd /usr/conf/lib
cp -p libuipc.a libuipc.a.orig
ar r /usr/conf/lib/libuipc.a \
/etc/sys_socket.o.ia.1122
mk_kernel
kmupdate

[reboot]


C. To subscribe to automatically receive future NEW HP Security

Use your browser to get to the HP IT Resource Center page

Use the 'Login' tab at the left side of the screen to login
using your ID and password. Use your existing login or the

To -gain access- to the Security Patch Matrix, select

matrix categorizes security patches by platform/OS release,
and by bulletin topic. Security Patch Check completely
automates the process of reviewing the patch matrix for
11.XX systems. Please note that installing the patches
listed in the Security Patch Matrix will completely
implement a security bulletin _only_ if the MANUAL ACTIONS
field specifies "No."

The Security Patch Check tool can verify that a security
bulletin has been implemented on HP-UX 11.XX systems providing
that the fix is completely implemented in a patch with no
manual actions required. The Security Patch Check tool cannot
verify fixes implemented via a product upgrade.
