| -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 ----------------------------------------------------------------- **REVISED 01** Source: HEWLETT-PACKARD COMPANY SECURITY BULLETIN: HPSBUX0303-249 Originally issued: 17 March 2003 Last revised: 30 June 2004 SSRT3522 rev.1 Tomcat 3.3.1 unauthorized access ----------------------------------------------------------------- NOTICE: There are no restrictions for distribution of this Bulletin provided that it remains complete and intact. The information in the following Security Bulletin should be acted upon as soon as possible. Hewlett-Packard Company will not be liable for any consequences to any customer resulting from customer's failure to fully implement instructions in this Security Bulletin as soon as possible. ----------------------------------------------------------------- PROBLEM: Potential vulnerabilities with using Tomcat 3.3.1 or earlier have been reported at <http://cve.mitre.org>: CAN-2003-0042, CAN-2003-0043, CAN-2003-0044 IMPACT: Remote unauthorized access or potential code execution. PLATFORM: HP-UX B.11.00, B.11.11, B.11.20, and B.11.22 running HP Tomcat. SOLUTION: Download and install a new HP Tomcat product from <http://www.software.hp.com/>. MANUAL ACTIONS: Yes - Update plus other actions Install the product containing the fix. For customers with HPApache the fix requires migration to hpuxwsTOMCAT and removal of the affected products from the system. AVAILABILITY: Complete product bundles are available now on <http://www.software.hp.com/> CHANGE SUMMARY: Rev.1 - clarified affected versions, removed OV SIP from list of affected products Note: Several Apache security bulletins are being revised to correct the affected versions specification. ----------------------------------------------------------------- A. Background The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project <http://cve.mitre.org/> has identified multiple potential vulnerabilities in the Jakarta-Tomcat servlet engine (CAN-2003-0042, CAN-2003-0043, CAN-2003-0044). More details are available at: <http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CAN-2003-0042> <http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CAN-2003-0043> <http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CAN-2003-0044> AFFECTED VERSIONS Note: To determine if a system has an affected version, search the output of "swlist -a revision -l fileset" for an affected fileset. Then determine if the recommended patch or update is installed. HP-UX B.11.00 HP-UX B.11.11 HP-UX B.11.20 HP-UX B.11.22 ============= For B9415AA ApacheStrong.TOMCAT --> action: install revision 3.3.1a or subsequent HPApache.TOMCAT HPApache.TOMCAT2 --> action: remove (migrate to hpuxwsTOMCAT) HP-UX B.11.00 HP-UX B.11.11 HP-UX B.11.22 ============= hpuxwsTOMCAT.TOMCAT hpuxwsTOMCAT.TOMCAT2 --> action: install revision A.1.0.10.01 or subsequent END AFFECTED VERSIONS B. Recommended solution The Apache Group has released Tomcat 3.3.1a as the best known version that fixes the problems identified in the above mentioned issues. Check for Tomcat Installation ----------------------------- To determine if the Tomcat Servlet Engine from HP is installed on your system, use Software Distributor's swlist command. Since Tomcat is not visible at the "product" level, search for Apache. All versions of products may co-exist on a single system. For example, the results of the command: swlist -l product | grep -i apache ApacheStrong 1.3.19.21 HP Apache-based Web Server with Strong (128bit) Encryption HPApache 2.0.39.01.02 HP Apache-based Web Server Stop Tomcat ----------------------------- Before updating, make sure to stop any previous Tomcat binary. Otherwise, the previous binary will continue running, preventing the new one from starting, although the installation would be successful. After determining which Tomcat is installed, stop Tomcat with the following commands: for ApacheStrong: /opt/tomcat/bin/shutdown.sh for HPApache: /opt/hpapache2/tomcat/bin/shutdown.sh Since Tomcat is bundled with Apache, Apache also needs to be stopped: for ApacheStrong: /opt/apache/bin/apachectl stop for HPApache: /opt/hpapache2/bin/apachectl stop Download and Install Tomcat and Apache ----------------------------- - Download Tomcat/Apache from Software Depot: <http://www.software.hp.com> - Verify successful download by comparing the cksum with the value specified on the installation web page. - Use SD to swinstall the depot. - For customers with HPApache installed, migrate to hpuxwsTOMCAT and remove the affected products from the system. Installation of this new version of HP Apache over an existing HP Apache installation is supported, while installation over a non-HP Apache is NOT supported. Removing Tomcat Installation ---------------------------- If you prefer to remove Tomcat from your system instead of installing a newer version to resolve the security problem, use both Software Distributor's "swremove" command and also "rm -rf" the home location as specified in the rc.config.d file "HOME" variables. To find the files containing HOME variables in the /etc/rc.config.d directory: %ls /etc/rc.config.d | grep apache apacheconf hpapache2conf NOTE: Apache will also be removed. NOTE: For HP Apache 1.3.x, you must manually remove the Apache directory in addition to the Tomcat directory. Apache is under directory "/opt/apache" for HP Apache 1.3.x. * The software product category that this Security Bulletin relates to is represented by the 5th and 6th characters of the Bulletin number: GN=General, MA=Management Agents, MI=Misc. 3rd party, MP=HP-MPE/iX, NS=HP NonStop Servers, OV=HP OpenVMS, PI=HP Printing & Imaging, ST=HP Storage, TU=HP Tru64 UNIX, TL=Trusted Linux, UX=HP-UX, VV=Virtual Vault SUPPORT: For further information, contact HP Services support channel.
