Looks like the M1689 is a highly integrated design, combining the north and south bridges in a single chip. Near as I can tell, ASUS adds only a Realtek 8201CL 10/100 ethernet chip (aside from CPU and RAM, of course), and maybe a video accelerator chip -- some Nvidia thing? The chip's new enough that I have no data for it on my Linux SATA page (http://linuxmafia.com/faq/Hardware/sata.html), but other pages sound a little discouraging. Of course, sound (Realtek chip?) and video drivers will also be a concern. http://www.ocworkbench.com/ocwb/ulti...pic/41/48.html http://www.ocworkbench.com/ocwbcgi/u...1;t=000123;p=0 http://www.ocworkbench.com/ocwb/ulti...pic/41/82.html http://www.linuxformat.co.uk/index.p...ewtopic&t=1678 n http://www.ussg.iu.edu/hypermail/lin...11.2/1140.html http://www.linuxselfhelp.com/forum/v...c.phtml?p=2564 http://www.anandtech.com/talkarticle...471&frmWhere=2 |

Actually, that is what I did with the PC I ended up buying. It is using a customized HP version of some Asus A8AE -- which retail/sku mobo it is patterned after I'm not sure. I was leary of the ATI Xpress 200 chipset, but 3 weeks of "testing" and poking has not revealed anything I did not expect. For $550 out of pocket I'm quite pleased. Even if it is a Compaq I think I'll keep it. It's about time I had a 64 bit cpu and OS at home;-) http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...name=c00571943 Whenever I shop for PCs or laptops I _always_ carry 2 or 3 Knoppix CDs. Damned handy for verifying the bona fides of candidate purchases. Even managed to find a Linksys wrt54v2 for $50, so I should squelch my purchases before I get burned. cheers, prg |
