| Hi, have just had to start my whole debian installation again because LILO got corrupted Now, upon doing a base network install, I find that simple commands such as 'whois', 'traceroute', 'host' and 'dig' are missing! I have to do an apt-get install <whois/host etc> for the commands to work! Can someone please tell me what i've done wrong, and what is the package called I need to install that will bring back all my basic commands! Many thanks. -- chris |

I'm no expert since I've only done installs a handfull of times, but I suspect you went wrong in assuming you needed to reinstall merely because LILO became corrupted. If it's not booting at that point, you slip a boot disk into the computer, and let that boot. Then you have a working Linux, and you can fix the LILO issue. Michael |

Many thanks. You didn't do anything wrong. The commands (or the packages that contain the commands) are simply not part of the base system. Some of them have their own package (whois, host, traceroute), so there is not a way to install them all at once as far as I know. However you should be able to find most of them by searching the net section of the packages, e.g. using aptitude or synaptic. Maybe there is also a task installable via tasksel that installs these packages. best regards Andreas Janssen -- Andreas Janssen <andreas.janssen@bigfoot.com> PGP-Key-ID: 0xDC801674 ICQ #17079270 Registered Linux User #267976 http://www.andreas-janssen.de/debian-tipps.html |

You didn't do anything wrong. Those commands just aren't part of the base install. They're not essential to boot and run the basic system although some people will say other commands that *are* installed aren't needed either. If you want those commands you have to install them as you need them. -- Andy. |

Or if you couldn't manage that, reinstall lilo. Nothing else! > Now, upon doing a base network install, I find that simple commands such > as 'whois', 'traceroute', 'host' and 'dig' are missing! All is right. > called I need to install that will bring back all my basic commands! There is no such "package". Install whatever you want. "host" is not a particularly basic command, nor is whois, traceroute, and so on. Some of these come from bind and host. They're all network commands. Look for a networking "task" to install. Peter |

Many thanks. dselect by default will install all the important (or standard, i don't remember) packages so just enter dselect, go to select, touch something, exit, then run apt-get dselect-upgrade (or run install inside dselect) and you will get a good starting point -- Gonzalo Pérez de Olaguer Córdoba <gpoc@iies.es> PGP key 2861C704 --- F206 5671 6789 425D 111C 1302 214F 1934 2861 C704 -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.4 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFAqFF0IU8ZNChhxwQRAqo4AJ9m5BaXYT3gdxmC2wPeIf O9MY4c2gCeIGcK 8/DB8tS7vcKd7cAyHQODDEQ= =KL4A -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- |
