| Hi, I have FC5 and I'd like to upgrade. I have downloaded the FC8 and made a DVD. When I reboot my laptop to start installation, it cannot recognize the FC8 DVD and fails to start with that so in contiunes with the old OS that I had. What' s wrong? is it related to FC8 or my computer? Reza |

Actually it doesnt give any message. It says just ''boot from optical drive...'' (as it's supposed) and then after few seconds goes to the original dual boot manager which I could choos between Windows or Linux. so in somehow, it simply ignors DVD ! |

I think you DVD is OK. you should set the BIOS, choose first boot from cd |

I think it might related to type of processor, i.e I had to get the x86 instead of the other one because I have acer with Centrino. I did this and I hoped it goes through smoothly but unfortunately the same again !! any other idea? |

First, make sure you can actually mount and read the DVD, just to make sure it's good in that way. Are you sure you actually wrote the DVD with the right switches so it is a bootable DVD? If the computer is old enough, it may not be able to boot more recent DVDs. With at least one distribution, it's a common problem with the latest release on older computers. The issue is that the BIOS in older computers was expecting a certain format when booting from CD/DVD and that's been superceded by a slightly different format. The solution in that case is to boot with a floppy that has the smartbootmanager on it, and that in tern boots the actual CD/DVD. Michael |

I do not know what program you used to burn it, but you have to tell it to burn it as a raw file, not as a file. That was grub loading stage 2 probably, and it cannot find stage 2. Anyway, you have to reburn the dvd as a raw burn. |
