Default Catch 22 trying to install doc package

I've got Enlightenment 0.15.5.-48 running on one boot disk because I need
compatibility with an embedded installation elsewhere. Okay, what I really
need is binary compatibility with the kernel and user-programs' API. Both
installations are derived from the same RedHat 6.2 system disk. So far, so
good.

I wanted to find and install the doc package for enlightenment. I went to
their website and the only one I could find was the doc package for
0.16.x -- hey, no problem, I said glibly, I'll install that and it should
contain most of what I need. BUT ...

The enlightenment-docs-0.16.7-1.noarch.rpm package will not install. rpm
tells me that it won't install it because one of the prerequisites is, in
fact, enlightenment 0.16.

Which means that I can't install the doc files until I install the binary
but I don't want to install the binary until I read the doc to see how much
different it is than the previous version ... GOTCHA!!!

Okay, what can I do? I've tried rpm -i --force ... but it just gave me the
same messages as rpm -i ... so that won't work.

Does anyone know how to install a doc file without having the binary? Or
can someone tell me where I can find the old doc file for the binary I have.

TIA
Norm

Do:
$ rpm -qpl enlightenment-docs-0.16.7-1.noarch.rpm | more

You may not find any "real" docs in there. I could not spot any from a
pbone listing of contents.

If you spot what you think is some documentation, you can try rpm2cpio.
You may need Maximum RPM doc for how to use it:
http://www.rpm.org/max-rpm/s1-rpm-mi...-rpm2cpio.html

The .png's are just pictures. I've never seen a .xpm before and don't know
what it is.

BTW, I've got the book, "Maximum RPM"

Looks like the list I saw, and I'll be d^%d if I can spot the
"documents" in here. Suspect this is a "document viewer" for the docs
that reside elsewhere.

The .xpm file format is on "old" X pixmap graphics file.

Looked up the main enlightenment package for RH6.2 and fetched this
file list from :

So maybe the package you have contains the "docs" in one/all of:
/usr/share/enlightenment/E-docs/FIRST_0.16
/usr/share/enlightenment/E-docs/MAIN
/usr/share/enlightenment/E-docs/MAIN.ja
/usr/share/enlightenment/E-docs/MAIN.pl

Don't know why, but I still have the suspicion that the package is just
a document viewer app.

Just downloaded the .tgz of the docs and the documentation _is_ MAIN.
Not much to brag about. Not sure how useful you would find it for
RH6.2. The MAIN.pl is Polish and MAIN.ja must be Japanese?

If you need the RH 6.2 docs you can get them at http://rpm.pbone.net/
-- as rpms of course.

Install them both at the same time, using the "-U" command instead of "-i".

The man page is rudimentary while the Maximum RPM book gives more
useful examples -- and the OP has the book

BUT ... but ... I said that I didn't want to install the binary until
I read the doc to see how much different it was from the previous version
with which I had to maintain compatibility.
