Default Configure VIA video card

Hi
I'd like to know which is the way to obtain the best performance of a VIA
video card. I'm using kde 3.2.3 in slacware 10.
lspci says:

00:00.0 Host bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8623 [Apollo CLE266]
00:01.0 PCI bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8633 [Apollo Pro266 AGP]
00:0b.0 Modem: Smart Link Ltd.: Unknown device 8800 (rev 02)
00:0d.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd.
RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 10)
[usb lines]
00:11.0 ISA bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8235 ISA Bridge
00:11.1 IDE interface: VIA Technologies, Inc.
VT82C586A/B/VT82C686/A/B/VT823x/A/C/VT8235 PIPC Bus Master IDE (rev 06)
00:11.5 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc.
VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 50)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8623 [Apollo
CLE266] integrated CastleRock graphics (rev 03)

I tried putting "via" in the device section, but I get a 640x480 screen with
a square in the place of the mouse arrow. By now I'm using the "vesa"
driver, nice 800x600 screen but when trying to reproduce a vcd in full
screen mode I get many dropped frames.
I'll really appreciate your help,

sourceforge.net/projects/unichrome I upgraded to this yesterday on my
M10K-N box and glxgears performance went from 70 to 480.

That looks great! Do you have any tip for installing it? I downloaded 7
directories (3d, libvia, libxmcw, mp2player, mplayer-plugin, mythtv,
xfree86) but no instructions. I'm running slackware 10.
Let's do the follow up in comp.os.linux.setup

I downloaded the two gentoo boot disks (minimal and universal or
whatever), booted and selected phase 1 install (download and compile
everything). I had the epia wiki and the gentoo install docs up in a
browser on another computer for reference and followed those. There are a
few details left out, but I got there. Have 2.6.8 kernel and xorg with via
video support working. I have it coming up with kdm now, and have kde and
xfce installed. The epia wiki has lots of info, and some comes as
footnotes after the fact, so read well ahead before you do anything. I
have a DSL connection, but most of the time is spent with the compiles. I
mean to get the distributed compilation going as I have a couple of other
computers on the net, but I haven't gotten around to it. Allow a couple or
three days to get a working X system if you choose this route. It has been
fun, and things sure seem a lot faster.

Ray, I succesfully installed the kernel patch for via drm and I also
compiled and instaled the via_drv.o and installed via_dri.o
Also, frame rate rise a lot, from 45 to more than 200. But I'm having two
problems:
- The mouse arrow looks often like a square
- I see a dotted line in the mid-upper part of the screen

Any tip?

I can't figure what the problem would be, but I'll put on the old thinking
cap. Have you tried both hardware and software cursor - if so, do they
both act the same way?

You might try the linux forum at www.viaarena.com
