| hello everybody, I recently installed Fedora core 3, this distro really fits my needs and I am quite happy with it .... but not totally. Actually I have noticed some strange behaviors from the system. First of all, I have configured grub to boot windows by default as I am not the only one to use the PC (linux is sometimes worrisome for users who are not very at ease with PC technology) but after one or two rebooting now it is linux that boots by default. Second, gdm chooses randomly my desktop environment, sometimes it's failsafe, sometimes it's KDE and never xfce that I like to use, I am obliged to specify explicitly which environment I want to use for every session. Fianlly, I have noticed a performance decrease in by day day use, openoffice and firefox now take a long long load time (nevertheless I disabled all useless daemons and I tuned my hard disk performance using hdparm) and sometimes freeze for long seconds. I have tried a lot of distros and I really like fedora and would like to use it exclusively. Can somebody explain what is the problem with my distro or my PC and how to fix it ? thanks a lot, bye PS: it's been a long time that I didn't use Linux because a few months ago I had no PC, I somehow lost some linux skills that I used to have, so please excuse me. |

Here are some ideas for you to try: 1. Use the desktop application to make sure your preferred desktop is defaulted. You can use the KDE Desktop Manager utility to do this. Check the box for your preferred GUI but do not check "for this session only". Log Off and Log On again. Using this module, you can configure the KDE graphical login manager, kdm. You can change how the login screen looks, who has access using the login manager and who can shutdown the computer. Look at the Help files on "GUI" and "Desktop" for more info. 2. Configure GRUB and make sure you extend the time GRUB waits to boot a specific OS. Give yourself at least 30 seconds to read what the GRUB screen says. Adjust it to boot Windows as the default by choosing the "hda1" named OS -- if your Windows partition is on hda1. Use the name of OS edit function to change the default name of the OS to "Windows" so it will be distinctive and give a person rebooting time to see the choices. 3. The performance decrease I am not sure about. I would be very careful using hdparm to adjust HD performances. If you don't know what you are doing you can screw things up beyond hope. You may have changed an hd paramet with hdparm that actually decreased your drive speeds. How much RAM do you have? Fedora will work GUI with 512MB very well. Use the KDE application GKrellM to look at your system performance graphically. If you are maxing out on RAM and using a lot of swap space, you may have a memory problem AND your swap space read-write may be very slow (perhaps a consequence of using hdparm). HTH! Cheers, Dave |

The default Desktop environnemnt is GNome. How do it to configure to force to run KDE als default desktop envoronnemnet. I not understand how to explained above (2).
