It is funny that the harddrake utility of Mandrake wont recognize the worlds
best 56k h/w modem.
The utility lists it as Unknown under a question mark.

The modem is propely identified as
56K FaxModem Model 5610

On the details page it shows:
Vendor: US Robotics/3COM
Bus: PCI
Bus Identification: 12b9:1008:12b9:aa
Location on the bus: 0:9:0
Description: 56K FaxModem Model 5610
Media class: COMMUNICATION_SERIAL

Where the configure button for this?

Why isn't set up automatically?

USR hasn't been world's best in nearly 10 years. Telebit has remained rock
solid, but the consumer grade modems from USR^H^H^H 3Com have been fairly
poor since the Sportster.

Note that most popular modems now are also Winmodems, meaning they have
offloaded a bunch of their processing to the CPU instead of being on the
modem, which saves the modem maker money but means you do require the
drivers for it.

.... i've always chosen multi-tech modems: http://www.multitech.com/
and external, of course. even their home-use modems inherit the
quality and reliability of their commercial versions

what exactly is there to configure?

{pts/1}% sudo grep ttyS /var/log/dmesg
ttyS0 at I/O 0x3f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A
ttyS4 at I/O 0xb800 (irq = 9) is a 16550A
^^^^^ this one is a 5610

Again what exactly should be setup? Modem is there ready for you to use.

Oh, I *love* Multitech ever since they were active supporters of HylaFAX
when I did a bunch of work with that. But I can't find them for sale in
Boston.

.... you can buy direct from their website. i've never been
able to buy a multi-tech from a consumer computer store. i
always had to go to a commercial outlet or buy direct.
