| I have an Abit nf7-s and use a overclocked CPU. I am trying to install graphically Linux Fedora but when anaconda loads and I see the mouse arrow, my pc freezes!!! I used commands like 'linux noprobe' and 'linux skipddc' but the problems still remains! So I installed the os via text but when I try to load it the system hangs (mouse arrow doesn't run)!!! What can I do? |

Do you mean you successfully installed it with "linux text noprobe"? I wouldn't have thought you would need the mouse in text mode. Couldn't you try "redhat-config-mouse" if you installed in text mode? But the problem still remains. In fact when i boot fedora and appears the mouse arrow the system hangs!!! I have a Radeon 9800. |

I thought that if you installed in text mode ("linux text") you got a text login console, in which case the mouse arrow would not appear. If it tries to boot in graphics mode and you have a floppy drive you could get tomsrtbt -- Linux on a floppy -- or Knoppix -- Linux on a CD -- and edit /etc/inittab to start in level 3 rather than 5. (Change "id:5:initdefault:" to "id:3:initdefault:".) But I may have misunderstood. -- Timothy Murphy e-mail (<80k only): tim /at/ birdsnest.maths.tcd.ie tel: +353-86-2336090, +353-1-2842366 s-mail: School of Mathematics, Trinity College, Dublin 2, Ireland |

Problem is in the 2.4.x kernel. Starting at 18th May you will have core 2 with 2.6.x kernel and try and see how it works... -- Mladen Adamovic Department of Computer Enigneering Faculty of Electrical Engineering University Of Banja Luka |

Mladen? The original post was on Dec 19, 2003. I suspect he's dealt with the problem by now. But I'd suggest he install text mode, then do all the updates (including the X tools and kernel updates available for *THEN* try do deal with the NVidia chipset, including the use of the published but proprietary NVidia drivers for Linux from www.nvidia.com. The kernel doesn't really deal with this problem per se. The difficulty with NVidia is mostly in their unpublished API's and their refusal to provide them in open source form, only via closed source in binary OpenGL libraries with kernel modules to provide hooks to use the proprietary libraries. (Been there, done that, had to deal with a bunch of old NVidia cards lately.) |

That chipset had problems with Linux recently solved in 2.6.x. I know that there is also problem with nVidia cards. -- Mladen Adamovic Department of Computer Enigneering Faculty of Electrical Engineering University Of Banja Luka |
