| Hi there ! A friend of mine has RedHat 7.0 installed on his machine ; he would like to upgrade to 7.2. If merely re-installing, he would lose a lot of config , so he just want to upgrade. Where can I download such an upgrade package, now that RedHat no longer maintains old distros ? |

If your friend wants to upgrade, why not upgrade all the way to RHL 9? If you go to a bookstore, many books on Linux will have a CD-ROM inside one of the covers. For RHL9, it will take, IIRC, 3 CD-ROM. Or upgrade to either Fedora or Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3. -- .~. My friend wants to upgrade, not re-install. Do you think that there are upgrading files available that are supposed to upgrade straight from RH 7.2 to RH 9 ? > If you go to a bookstore, many books on Linux will have a CD-ROM inside > one of the covers. It usually just hangs a little way into the upgrade process and I have to hit the reset button to get out of it. So, instead, I make and verify three backup tapes of my entire file system and after doing the new install, restore things like /home and selected parts of the rest. Then follows about a week or more of diddling all the configurations, mainly in /etc. What is the point of upgrading from RHL7.0 to RHL7.2? Why not RHL7.3? You might be able to find a friend who has the RHL7.3 CD-ROMs around. Though I tossed mine about 6 months ago. And there were a great number of security fixes and bug fixes since the CD-ROMs were produced that I obtained with up2date. But there is no support for RHL7.* so IMAO it just does not make sense to upgrade from one obsolete version to another. If you are interested in the security fixes, you will not get enough to bother with. Even if you go to RHL9, support for that is terminated, so you will not even be able to get the updates for it, at least, not easily, and how would you even find out what updates are needed? Consider that I am running Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 which came out late last year, well after RHL7.3 was discontinued, and since it is a premium product where reliability, security, and stability are the main goals, and costing quite a bit annually, you can be sure Red Hat made it as good as they could. Yet not too long afterwards, they had two major updates. In the March 2004 one they had over 100 packages to update on my machine, and in the May 2004 one, there were 147 packages updated on my machine. So anyone installing something like RHL7.3 or even RHL8 would probably need to update more than 250 packages just to be up with last May. > >>If you go to a bookstore, many books on Linux will have a CD-ROM inside >>one of the covers. The installation CD's include an upgrade option. They can be found on various RedHat mirror sites listed at www.redhat.com. But your friend should *really* think about updating to Fedora, for security reasons. Even if your friend needs to upgrade their hard drive as well, it's possible to duplicate the hard drive and do the update on that larger duplicate instead. |

All the RedHat insallation CD sets, for some time now, will upgrade you from the older releases of RedHat to the new release on teh CD's. |

If you must stay with 7.x you ought to go with 7.3 -- some sites still have the last set of upgrades/patches for 7.3 (but not 7.2). > >> Where can I download such an upgrade package, now that RedHat no longer > >> maintains old distros ? > > > > If your friend wants to upgrade, why not upgrade all the way to RHL 9? > > My friend wants to upgrade, not re-install. Do you think that there are > upgrading files available that are supposed to upgrade straight from RH > 7.2 to RH 9 ? Not to be relied upon -- same backups needed for such an upgrade jump as a new install. On the other hand, he should back up data in either case -- only thing to quibble about are config files, which have probably changed since 7.1 anyway ;-) > > If you go to a bookstore, many books on Linux will have a CD-ROM inside > > one of the covers. Sooner or later (sooner probably) you'll have to make the leap -- RH9 is already legacy, (free) update support for 7.x and 8.x is gone and FC1 is slated for legacy in Sept 04. Copy all the config files you can think of -- at least /etc/* and /home/* as a quick and dirty way -- install new OS, restore config backups. My guess is -- especially if this is a desktop box -- you would better off re-configuring by hand to get familiar with the new layouts, features, and options ... Most of us don't like shopping/dealing for a new car, but you gotta do it every so often if you're gonna drive (in the US anyway ;-) good luck, prg email above disabled |

RH7.0 was a 2.2.x kernel running on glibc-2.1.93 (which was an unoffical version released only by Red Hat and had compatibility problems), while 7.2 was a 2.4.x kernel, running on glibc2.2.4 nevermind all of the desktop changes. The other problem is that your friend is obviously not making an effor to keep the systems up to date. RH7.0 came out in September 2000, and support for it was ended in April 2003. Even 7.2 which came out in October 2001 has been unsupported since last year. >Where can I download such an upgrade package, now that RedHat no longer >maintains old distros ? I suppose you could check to see if www.linuxiso.org still has it. If not, try the used book stores and see if you can find an older book with GPL CDs. As Nico Kadel-Garcia mentions, "upgrade" has been an option in place of "install" on RH for years - I recall being offered that option with 3.0.3 in 1996. Given that, I'd strongly recommend going to something up to date, like Fedora or Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3. The procedure is covered in the installation manual. Also, I've never been happy doing an "upgrade", as it's a lot more of a mess than doing a full backup (or two) of your current setup, then wiping the install and putting in a clean install of the new stuff. You can then go to your backups, and retrieve the files you may specifically need and translating them to the current setup. (Often, when jumping so many versions, even configuration files will no longer be compatible.) Old guy |
